Environmental Health & Safety Manager 9 / 17 / 25 Boksburg, ZAF, Onsite PositionJoin Komatsu and Be Part of Something BigJob OverviewThe Komatsu Mining hard rock business is looking for an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to lead the delivery, implementation and refinement of EHS and Security policies and practices across regional operations and customer sites for the hard rock GHH South Africa business unit based in Boksburg, South Africa.
The role in collaboration with the business will support the development, implementation and ongoing execution of the EHS strategic plan.
They oversee EHS activities to ensure compliance with national, customer and company standards, and assist in developing and coordinating EHS initiatives.
The role involves analyzing and addressing incidents of loss, guiding pollution prevention and waste minimisation efforts, and regularly communicating key performance metrics.
The EHS Manager reports to the EHS Director, with matrix reporting to the business to ensure alignment with organisational goals and regulatory requirements.
Additionally the EHS Manager leads, coaches and mentors EHS officers and administration to achieve business EHS goals and promote individual employee growth.
Key Job Responsibilities
Develop, implement and execute the EHS strategic business plan in collaboration with business partners. Lead by demonstrating the required behaviours, attitudes and mindset to further develop the EHS culture. Over implementation of EHS initiatives and act as a change agent regarding integration into the core business processes. Provide the necessary resources, technical guidance, education, coaching, counselling and mentoring to assist managers, supervisors and employees in the understanding and application of EHS requirements. Monitor all injury and illness incidents and assist with the organisation's Worker's Compensation management efforts to effectively reduce costs and other associated negative outcomes (recordability, restricted and / or lost workday classifications), while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. Champion the organisations EHS Policies and Principles. Oversee facility Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health initiatives, protocols and best practices. Lead programme and site internal and ISO audits, provide instruction and assistance to operations and EHS personnel on issues identification, implementation of corrective actions and documentation of issue closure. Support corporate monitoring, record keeping and reporting initiatives to effectively demonstrate compliance with external regulatory requirements and company best practices. Ensure environmental compliance with solid and hazardous waste, air emissions and water quality regulatory requirements, and drive pollution prevention initiatives that help reduce operating costs. Participate in the departmental budgeting and planning process. Manage the budget for all areas of responsibility as determined by the hard rock business unit management. Develop, implement and execute site security requirements to ensure ongoing safety of staff and property.
Qualifications / Requirements
B.S. degree or diploma in Safety, Health and Environmental Management or related field.
Minimum of 8 years practical EHS experience in the heavy industrial and manufacturing sectors with increasing roles and responsibilities.
Mining experience helpful but not required.
Understanding of ISO environmental and safety programmes and auditing practices, comprehensive understanding of all Federal / National / District, OH&S regulations and standards as they relate to General Industry and Mining operations.
Training expertise in Workplace Hazardous Materials, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and behavioural based safety management are desired.
Knowledge of Workers' Compensation Claims Management and best management practices.
Experience in leading a small team of EHS professionals.
Valid passport and drivers licence in line with requirement to travel up to 25% of the time to visit other locations in South Africa including customer sites, attend meetings, deliver training seminars etc. International travel for global meetings and trainings on occasion.
Strong communication skills in support of building a zero harm culture across the organisation. Strong computer skills for reporting and programme maintenance (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
