The Department of Psychiatry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Department of Psychiatry of the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre are seeking to recruit an Academic Youth Psychiatrist. The successful candidate will qualify for an academic position as a Clinician-Teacher or Clinician-Educator and must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer, or preferably Assistant, Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Anticipated start date is as soon as March 1, 2026 , or as determined in discussions with the candidate.
The Sunnybrook Department of Psychiatry is a collegial team of over 50 psychiatrists working with allied staff in a 47 bed Schedule 1 facility, including ten Youth beds (ages 14-18), 28 Adult / Geriatric beds and 9 Psychiatric ICU beds. The successful applicant will provide youth psychiatry services alongside a multi-disciplinary team, with a focus on delivering excellent clinical care for complex mood and anxiety disorders. The successful applicant will work in a variety of settings, including the youth inpatient unit (on average, managing 2-4 adolescent youth beds at any given time). The candidate will also participate in some urgent outpatient assessments, developing new outpatient services and programs (including collaborative care) to build capacity and facilitate optimization of urgent care assessment pathways. There will be ample opportunities for research participation and dissemination, particularly projects aligned with divisional priorities around quality improvement initiatives.
The successful applicant will participate in the clinical and academic interprofessional activities of the Department of Psychiatry and the Youth Division of Psychiatry including the psychiatry call system and teaching program. They will contribute to a program of educational scholarship, leadership, and administration focused on child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) and will be expected to eventually assume an education leadership position. Leadership positions could include the local site coordinator for CAP undergraduate MD education and the local site coordinator for CAP postgraduate education. The successful applicant will also contribute to ongoing CAP training and teaching across the continuum of education (undergraduate MD, resident, fellowship, and continuing medical education).
The successful applicant must hold an MD degree, must be Royal College / Board Certified or Royal College / Board Eligible in Psychiatry and must be eligible for medical licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. It is preferred that the successful candidate be eligible for a FRCPC in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent. The candidate should have a track record of excellence in teaching given the frequent presence of learners on the team.
Compensation will be based on protected academic time commensurate with the candidate’s academic experience and expertise plus a fee-for-service structure, with additional funding through Academic and Educational Trust Funds and / or Departmentally-sanctioned administrative roles.
