INTERNSHIP ADVERTISEMENT

The Nelson Mandela Foundation is a non-profit organisation focused on memory, dialogue, and legacy work. We are the custodian of Nelson Mandela’s life and times; we are a committed facilitator of his living legacy; and we are mandated to promote his lifelong vision of freedom and equality for all.

The foundation is looking for interns for a period of months starting 1 April 3.

HUMAN RESOURCES INTERN

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the HR Manager with HR Administration across the HR value chain.
  • Coordinate all recruitment administration activities by; matching applicants’ credentials to the advertised job profile and shortlisting, liaising with agencies to obtain all required checks and references, setting up interviews, receiving interviewees and interviewers, providing HR service in interviews, preparing interview reports for internally driven recruitment. ·
  • Coordinate the institutional and departmental Induction schedule for new employees.
  • Assist with monitoring monthly demographic, leave, age, terminations analysis and report trends. ·
  • Arrange meetings with medical aid and pension / provident fund brokers as required, advise the brokers of new employees and terminations. ·
  • Assist with coordination of completion of performance agreements aligned with organizational goals ·
  • Assist with collating all performance ratings attained and submit to the HR Manager for moderation and calibration purposes.
  • Coordinator all Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and submit to the HR Manager to ensure reasonableness of the plan.

  • Assist with organising the annual Employee Wellness Day events in conjunction with Communications department ·
  • Provide input into internal communications plan and approach for the year · Conduct yearly culture/ employee satisfaction surveys ·

In order to be eligible for the internship, applicants must:

  • Hold a qualification in Human Resources.
  • Be recently graduated with little or full-time work experience.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritise work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word & Excel, Facebook, website design, Instagram, Twitter, Google apps)
  • Show a demonstrated ability to multi-task and ability to prioritise across multiple projects and social media platforms.
  • Ability to write for public consumption.
  • Must be willing and able to work in teams and be a self-starter.

DIALOGUE AND ADVOCACY INTERN

Responsibilities

  • Assisting dialogue and advocacy team on logistics on upcoming events including managing registers, templates, and other logistical issues
  • Planning and coordination of travel logistics
  • Taking minutes of meetings and writing donor reports
  • Assisting with research on key focus areas for the dialogue programme
  • Assisting the team with developing advocacy approaches around key focus areas
  • Assisting in providing content to various departments
  • Data capturing
  • Adhoc tasks

In order to be eligible for the NMF internship, applicants must:

  • Hold a qualification in the Social Sciences (or a related qualification that you are able to motivate relates to the work of the Dialogue programme at NMF);
  • Be recently graduated with no prior full-time work experience – preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefitted from an internship opportunity within a South African NGO.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritise work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Be competent in Microsoft Office software.

IP AND GOVERNANCE INTERN

Responsibilities

  • Assist the General Counsel in preparing and distribution of sub-committee and Board packs.
  • Assist with Minuting of sub-committee and board meetings.
  • Follow through on action emanating from meetings.
  • Maintain an impeccable registry of the Governance records.
  • Assist the General Counsel to co-ordinate process of trustee nominations.
  • Assist the General Counsel to maintain accurate record of Trustees with the Master of Trusts which includes deregistration of trustees resigning and registration of new trustees.
  • Collaborate with external parties e.g., legal advisers and both the internal and external auditors.
  • Collaborate with external organisations to provide guidance on governance matters.
  • Support and guide individuals wishing to establish a non-profit entity.
  • Develop legislated manuals for the institution for POPIA and PAIA.
  • Ensure that staff are appropriately trained to give effect to new or revised legislation.
  • Co-ordinate commencement of projects by the implementation and review of an appropriate legal framework.
  • Ensure that projects are concluded in accordance with contractual obligations.
  • Support and participate in the formulation of institutional ethical standards and good governance framework in line with standing national and international protocols and principles.
  • Participate in the preservation and appropriate use of NMF Intellectual Property by staff, the public and organisations that hold Nelson Mandela intellectual property.
  • Assess and respond in consultation with the HoD to requests for the use of trademarks.
  • Participate in the quarterly IP meetings to instruct the attorneys on IP matters.

In order to be eligible for the internship, applicants must:

  • Hold a Law degree.
  • Be recently graduated with little or full-time work experience.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritise work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word & Excel, Facebook, website design, Instagram, Twitter, Google apps)
  • Show a demonstrated ability to multi-task and ability to prioritise across multiple projects and social media platforms.
  • Ability to write for public consumption.
  • Must be willing and able to work in teams and be a self-starter.

CEO’S OFFICE INTERN

Responsibilities:

  • Support the writing production of various departments. This includes pitching, drafting, and publishing stories for our social media handles, websites, newsletter and the media.
  • Assist the thought leadership of the department through research, brainstorming and concept ideation. This includes research on issues facing society, political analysis, and keeping abreast of public discourse.
  • Support the general administration of the department which includes emailing, administering the calendar, note-taking and related activities.

In order to be eligible for the NMF internship, applicants must:

  • Hold a qualification in the Humanities or Social Sciences or other related qualification that you are able to motivate relates to the work of the department.
  • Demonstrate strong critical thinking, research, analytical and writing skills.
  • Be recently graduated with little or no prior full-time work experience – preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefitted from an internship opportunity within a South African NGO.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritise work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Have strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Suite, Facebook, website design, Instagram, Twitter, Google apps).
  • Be able to write for public consumption.

COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING & PR INTERN

Responsibilities:

  • Produce creative communications content that can be packaged to suit different needs within the organisation including but not limited to the media database health, annual report, fact sheets, website and social media platforms, short digital updates or newsletters and media monitoring.

In order to be eligible for the internship, applicants must:

  • Hold a qualification in communications or journalism and or relevant writing or communications experience in the NGO sector, media or marketing (or a related qualification that you are able to motivate relates to the work of the communications programme at NMF).
  • Be recently graduated with little or no prior full-time work experience – preference will be given to applicants who have not previously benefitted from an internship opportunity within a South African NGO.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in human rights advocacy and constitutional issues and an interest in building a career in civil society in South Africa.
  • Be able to plan, prioritise work, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Be systematic and thorough in their approach to work, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word & Excel, Facebook, website design, Instagram, Twitter, Google apps)
  • Show a demonstrated ability to multi-task and ability to prioritise across multiple projects and social media platforms.
