ALX Africa, a non-profit organisation under the ALX Foundation, is dedicated to unlocking the potential of Africa's digital future. Formerly part of Sand Tech Holdings, we've embarked on an independent journey to provide world‑class tech skills training and career acceleration programmes. Our mission is to bridge the digital divide, upskill and reskill talent, and create a generation of innovative leaders. By 2030, we aim to empower 2 million Africans to secure sustainable tech careers.

With hubs in 8 cities across Africa and counting, we provide safe access to quality learning and a dedicated network of expert instructors. Our innovative programmes equip learners with the practical skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today's rapidly evolving tech industry. Through a combination of rigorous coursework, industry partnerships, and hands‑on projects, we prepare our students for in‑demand roles in software engineering, data science, and cybersecurity.

The Senior Learning Experience Designer manages a team of Learning Experience Designers, oversees the creation of high‑quality curricula, and ensures all programs align with our learning principles and strategic goals.

You will act as both a coach and a project manager : guiding the design team, setting up workflows, ensuring timely delivery, and maintaining quality. You’ll collaborate with subject matter experts, industry partners, and internal teams to develop innovative programs in fast‑growing fields, ensuring they are scalable, practical, and impactful.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the design of new programs, ensuring learning experiences are practical, scalable, and industry‑relevant.
  • Ensure curricula and assessments embody our learning design principles and are aligned with desired competencies.
  • Collaborate with industry subject matter experts and institutions to co‑create cutting‑edge program content.
  • Lead and coach Learning Experience Designers, providing feedback and professional development in instructional design, media integration, and data‑informed storytelling.
  • Manage design workflows, sprints, and retrospectives to ensure smooth delivery.
  • Oversee staffing allocations, project plans, and delivery calendars.
  • Establish strong review processes for content quality, accessibility, and pedagogical rigor.
  • Contribute to internal learning initiatives and workshops that strengthen the learning design function organization‑wide.
  • Quality & Innovation

  • Ensure alignment with codified learning principles and institutional standards.
  • Incorporate learner, facilitator, and partner feedback into design iterations.
  • Experiment with new tools, technologies, and media formats (including AI) to enhance learner engagement and outcomes.
  • Drive a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across the design team.
  • Codify best practices, frameworks, and tools into playbooks and templates that enable consistent, high‑quality design across programs.
  • Data & Insights

  • Use learner performance data, completion metrics, and feedback to iteratively improve course design and delivery.
  • Develop dashboards or reporting frameworks in partnership with the data team to track learning effectiveness, engagement, and assessment validity.
  • Advocate for evidence‑based decision‑making in program and content iterations.
  • REQUIREMENTS

    Experience

  • Proven track record in instructional design, learning experience design, or curriculum development.
  • Experience leading teams of designers or educators, with strong coaching and mentorship abilities.

  • Experience working with or integrating AI‑powered learning or assessment tools.
  • Beneficial : exposure to creative industries, digital media, or emerging technology fields.
  • Beneficial : Prior experience working in accredited or competency‑based education programs is a plus.
  • Skills

  • Expertise in instructional design methods, curriculum frameworks, and learner‑centered design.
  • Strong systems thinking and ability to design learning experiences that balance pedagogy, technology, and operations.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with SMEs, partners, and cross‑functional teams.
  • Ability to translate research and feedback into actionable program improvements.
  • Passion for innovation in learning, with comfort navigating ambiguity and complexity.
  • Familiarity with authoring tools (e.g. H5P) and learning management systems.
  • Strong storytelling, writing, and editing skills for creating engaging learning narratives.

  • EMPLOYMENT TYPE

    This role is a full‑time position.

    WORK HOURS

    The required work hours are 40 hours per week.

    Due to the considerable amount of virtual working and interaction with colleagues and customers in different physical locations internationally, it is essential that the successful applicant has the drive and ethic to succeed working in small teams physically but in larger efforts virtually. Self‑drive to communicate constantly using web collaboration and video conferencing is essential. As an employee, you will be encouraged to continually develop your capability & attain certifications to reflect your growth as an individual.
