Requirements :

  • MBChB qualification. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner, DipPEC, EMSSA level 1 Ultrasound course. Six (6) months experience in Accident and Emergency under the guidance of an emergency physician. At least 3 of the following current emergency-related courses : Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS or APLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS or EMATT). RECOMMENDATION : The following certificates will be an added advantage : EMSSA ultrasound accreditation, FCEM part 1, ECG course.
  • Duties :

  • Clinical duties in Emergency Unit (includes after-hour duties). Clinical guidance of Emergency unit nurse, community service doctors and interns. Accompaniment and clinical guidance of medical students and clinical associates. Assist with logistic arrangements including waiting time in the Emergency unit. Participation in the academic programme of the Department of Family Medicine & Emergency Medicine.

Registrars will be required to rotate between the different institutions. Preference will be given to South African citizens. The performance of normal and commuted overtime is not mandatory, however it will be based on the operational needs of the hospitals.
