Overview

The core purpose of the role is to formulate and execute sourcing strategies for commodities within the allocated category, following the defined Strategic Sourcing process to extract value from the spend using a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) approach across the supply value chain. The incumbent conducts value opportunities assessments, formulates sourcing strategies, executes sourcing events (e.g., RFP), conducts fact-based negotiations, develops and concludes agreements, manages supplier performance and savings tracking, and ensures procurement governance is followed. The role aims to maximise value for money, generate cost savings, build strong supplier relationships, facilitate collaborative negotiations, and track / report performance against contracts and business targets. It also involves capturing and challenging business needs to enable lean demand and innovative market solutions while minimising supply-related risk.

Key deliverables and outputs

Category Sourcing Execution

  • Formulate and execute sourcing strategies for commodities within the allocated category, applying the Strategic Sourcing process and a TCO approach across the supply value chain.
  • Execute category sourcing strategy and implement relevant policies and procedures for cost-effective, efficient strategic sourcing and supplier management.
  • Identify and implement improvements to the Category supplier database and incorporate the ESD strategy as per the agreed plan.
  • Execute sourcing events (e.g., RFX) as required by the category sourcing strategy.
  • Identify Category opportunities to leverage economies of scale and develop proposals and recommendations for leadership approval.
  • Contribute to initiatives that improve supply chain efficiency, maintain product quality standards, and reduce costs; monitor market price and demand indices affecting sourcing.
  • Understand market conditions to contribute to competitive sourcing strategies and cost control.
  • Conduct internal and external Category profiling.
  • Develop commodity should-cost models where required to extract value from the supply market.
  • Develop commodity sourcing project charters for each sourcing event.
  • Establish cross-functional teams from business stakeholders for each commodity to ensure an inclusive total solution.

Category Financial Targets

  • Achieve the agreed financial targets for the strategic sourcing category.
  • Drive realization of savings, supply efficiency, quality, and process improvements.
  • Identify saving opportunities and initiate projects at operational levels within the allocated category.
  • Support budgeting by providing goods and service pricing and unit rates.
  • Category Contract Management

  • Manage Category contracts to ensure contractual obligations are met and value is derived.
  • Implement contract compliance monitoring.
  • Identify and manage risks arising from contract operation and apply financial and operational controls.
  • Support fact-based negotiation by providing information on quality, delivery, and price and report cost savings.
  • Monitor volume thresholds and economies of scale.
  • Drive continuous improvement through ongoing engagements with existing and potential new suppliers.
  • Category Supplier Management

  • Manage Category supplier relationships to capture innovation and mitigate supply risks.
  • Monitor supplier performance to ensure delivery against SLAs and compliance.
  • Ensure B-BBEE credentials of suppliers are current.
  • Build and maintain relationships with management and suppliers in the allocated category.
  • Analyse and report on supplier trends for market intelligence.
  • Reporting, Risk, Ethics and Compliance

  • Implement and track performance indicators, benefits, and cost reductions for the Category.
  • Monitor compliance with legal, regulatory and policy requirements in the allocated category.
  • Identify and remove barriers to category strategy implementation.
  • Contribute to the risk register and manage category sourcing and supplier management risks.
  • Produce and maintain internal category sourcing and supplier management documentation.
  • Category Team Performance and Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure the Category team has requisite skills and experience.
  • Manage the team in line with the business Integrated Employee Value Model and foster continuous improvement, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Develop commitment to ethical behavior and practices.
  • Stakeholders

  • Internal : General Managers, Senior Managers, Exco, business units and functional areas within Category.
  • External : Category suppliers / service providers, industry organisations, regulatory bodies, customers.
  • Qualification, Experience and Competencies

    Academic qualifications

  • Essential : Relevant Degree / BTech (e.g., BCom, Commerce, Law, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Transport & Logistics, IT) or other relevant degrees; Postgraduate Diploma or Honors in Supply Chain or related field.
  • Advantageous : MBA or equivalent; CIPS membership / accreditation (MCIPS preferred).
  • Note : Valid driver’s license and passport; refer to CIPS Global Standard – Management Level.

    Work experience

  • Essential : Six to ten years in strategic sourcing / procurement / inventory management in the category or related sectors (commercial vehicle, logistics, transport, supply chain). Proven track record in strategic supplier relations and cross-functional delivery.
  • Advantageous : Networking within the relevant category.
  • Knowledge

  • Essential : Deep knowledge of strategic sourcing networks, BBEE and tender processes; knowledge of best practices and risks in procurement and supply chain; understanding of relevant laws and regulations; commercial acumen; cost modeling and data interpretation skills; strong negotiation and communication skills; ability to manage multiple tasks; computer / ERP proficiency.
