PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Safety Officer plays a critical role in supporting Lesedi Nuclear Services' mission to nurture a culture of safety and quality, where safety is a non-negotiable core value. The position is responsible for ensuring that all regulatory Health & Safety compliance requirements relevant to assigned projects are met, developing, implementing, and improving health and safety files, programs, and procedures. The role involves identifying HSE-related training needs and ensuring all site activities are conducted in a safe and compliant manner in accordance with the OHS Act and Regulations. The Safety Officer serves as a key interface with internal departments and external stakeholders including Eskom, Renewables, and Government departments.KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Regulatory Compliance and Documentation
Ensure full compliance with OH&S Act and client requirements across all project activitiesAccurately and continuously administer safety-related documentationMaintain all safety, health, and environmental records up to date and in proper orderEnsure all documents are correctly filed and easily retrievable for audits and inspectionsGenerate and maintain impacts and aspects registers for site activitiesSafety Monitoring and Reporting
Monitor project activities for compliance with approved safety plansIssue comprehensive reports indicating status of activities and project complianceGenerate weekly safety reports for both outage and non-outage periodsDocument audits and site visits, highlighting areas of concern and improvementReport on subcontractor activities and levels of complianceProduce detailed audit reports and deviation reports with impact evaluationsIncident Management and Control Systems
Ensure proper administration of incident reporting and investigation systemsIssue and control the Non-Conformance Report (NCR) systemMonitor corrective and preventative actions to ensure proper close-outManage legal documents and statutory registersReport any client-raised issues with proposed action plansSubcontractor and Vendor Management
Monitor subcontractor safety compliance and generate corrective action plansReview safety documentation submitted by subcontractors and internal partnersReview and analyze contractual safety changes and assess impact of modificationsEnsure subcontractor adherence to project safety standards and proceduresTraining and Development
Conduct generic SHE training and provide in-house coaching on safety aspectsIdentify HSE-related training needs for project teamsDeliver safety inductions and specialized safety training programsSupport development of safety competency across all project levelsAudit and Quality Assurance
Conduct internal audits and systematic checking of all SHE systems, lists, and filesLiaise with clients and carry out review audits as requiredSupport external audits and regulatory inspectionsContinuously improve SHE plans and recommend document updates as requiredQUALIFICATION
Minimum Requirements :
Certificate or Diploma in Safety ManagementSAMTRAC or NEBOSH certificationSACPCMP Registration (South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions)SHEQ System Auditing certification (ISO 9001, 14001, OHSAS 45001)Qualification or relevant experience in regulatory requirements (Construction Regulations)H&S training and development certifications (Incident Management, Risk Management, First Aid)EXPERIENCE
3-5 years related experience in a similar Safety Officer positionExperience on large Civil Engineering construction sitesProven track record in safety compliance and regulatory managementExperience in incident investigation and safety auditingCOMPETENCIES
Knowledge :
Comprehensive knowledge of OHS Act and other applicable safety legislationUnderstanding of construction regulations and industry-specific safety requirementsKnowledge of SHEQ management systems and auditing principlesUnderstanding of risk management and incident investigation methodologiesKnowledge of environmental impact assessment and managementFamiliarity with client-specific safety requirements (Eskom, Renewables sector)Understanding of legal compliance requirements and statutory obligationsSkills :
