Engineer: Blasting Operations

Job Purpose

A large mining house in the Northern Cape is seeking a highly skilled Engineer: Blasting Operations to coordinate mining operations and ensure optimal, safe, and cost-effective recovery of iron ore. The role focuses on drilling and blasting excellence, asset optimisation, cost control, and strict adherence to SHERQ and statutory requirements.

Key Performance Areas

The successful incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to:

• Coordinating drilling and blasting operations in line with sound mining practices
• Ensuring optimal production performance and ore recovery
• Monitoring and improving asset performance and utilisation
• Budget management and effective cost control
• Managing and overseeing contractors
• Ensuring full SHERQ compliance and statutory adherence
• Driving high standards of work ethics, governance, and discipline
• Supporting continuous improvement, innovation, and operational efficiency

Minimum Qualifications

• Grade 12
• National Diploma (NQF Level 6): Mining Engineering
• Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competence (NQF Level 7)
• Mining Blasting Certificate
• Certificate of Competence: Programme in Blasting Engineering / Explosives Engineering
• Postgraduate MBA / MBL / AMR Management or Leadership qualification will be advantageous

Experience Required

• Minimum 3 years’ operational experience as a Mining Engineer
• Minimum 5 years’ experience as a drilling and blasting specialist within a mining environment

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

Computer & Systems Literacy:

• MS Word, Excel, MS Project, JDE (Basic)
• MS Access (Intermediate)
• Database administration (SQL)

Technical & Specialist Knowledge:

• Drill and blast design and management systems
• Fleet management and control systems
• Drill monitoring and navigation systems
• Productivity analysis systems
• Research and development methodologies
