Our client, a leading specialist in fuel retail infrastructure and forecourt design, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Architect to lead the design, planning, and execution of fuel stations, forecourts, and associated retail facilities across South Africa.
This is a senior technical and design leadership role suited to an experienced architect who combines strong creative and technical capability with a detailed understanding of petroleum site layouts, regulatory frameworks, and construction principles. The successful candidate will oversee all design stages — from concept development to final construction drawings — ensuring functional, safe, and visually distinctive forecourt environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the architectural design of fuel stations, forecourts, canopies, convenience stores, and related facilities.
- Develop concept, schematic, and detailed design packages, including site layouts, elevations, and 3D visualisations.
- Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure that designs meet technical, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Ensure compliance with petroleum, fire safety, and environmental regulations, as well as local municipal by-laws.
- Oversee site layout planning including traffic flow, pump placement, access points, and tank positioning.
- Manage municipal and environmental submissions, ensuring timely approvals.
- Conduct site inspections and review work during construction to maintain design integrity and quality.
- Mentor and guide junior architects and draughtspersons, fostering technical and professional growth within the team.
- Liaise directly with clients and project managers to ensure design solutions align with business and operational needs.
- Integrate sustainability principles and innovative design approaches in all projects.
Requirements
Master’s Degree in Architecture.Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in architectural design, with at least 5 years working on fuel stations or forecourt developments.Professional registration with SACAP (PrArch or candidate in final stages).Strong experience in AutoCAD and Revit (ArchiCAD or BIM experience advantageous).Proven ability to produce high-quality design and technical documentation for fuel retail or commercial construction projects.In-depth understanding of petroleum infrastructure, fire and safety codes, and environmental design regulations.Excellent communication, leadership, and coordination skills.Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
