CLINICAL SCIENTIST - RESEARCH PROFESSOR (AC.05.3)

Research Professor (fixed‑term, 5 years, renewable based on performance) AC04 / AC05. The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand seeks to appoint a Research Professor / Senior Clinician Scientist. Focus areas may include :
- Cardiology – hypertension and cardiovascular prevention
- Endocrinology – obesity and diabetes
- Immunology – cellular immunity in infectious diseases
- Lung disease – acute or chronic respiratory diseases
- Oncology – nexus of cancer and infectious diseases
- Maternal and child health – stillbirths and premature labour
- Infectious diseases – antimicrobial resistance, hospital‑acquired infections, emerging infections and pandemic threats
- Other health‑care priorities in South Africa excluding HIV and TB
The position aims to strengthen leadership in clinical research and teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate).
Responsibilities
Conduct high‑level research in your expertise area, including publication and dissemination.Lead and supervise PhD and Masters of Medicine students and other researchers, including staff employed by the Gauteng Department of Health.Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students (maximum of 15% effort).Perform academic assessments.Engage in external academic activities and technology transfer.Maintain research productivity, aiming for at least six first‑author publications per annum in peer‑reviewed journals and secure significant external funding.Raise research funds and, if needed, self‑fund salary after five years.Restrict clinical practice to one day per week to focus on research.Qualifications
Specialist degree in a relevant field; sub‑specialty qualification preferred.PhD desirable, though not essential.Ranked at least associate professor level based on faculty promotion criteria.South African applicants registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa; non‑SAs may be considered but will be exempt from patient service.Eligible for appointment as Full Professor or on track to promotion within three years.Documented high‑quality research production and leadership; exceptional communication skills.Application Details
