Overview

Nutrition Services Lead I—Nancy Ryles ES role at Beaverton School District. This position directs, leads, organizes, and plans the Nutrition Services program in an elementary school or small-sized program, ensuring nutritious and attractive meals are served to students in an effective, cost-contained, healthy and customer-friendly manner.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.
  • Prepare and serve appropriate quantities of food in a timely manner, assuring proper quality and quantity of food prepared.
  • Prepare and assemble a variety of hot and cold entrées, fruits, vegetables, and other foods.
  • Follow written menus, production records and production standards.
  • Follow recipes for consistent quality and cost effectiveness; provide feedback to supervisor regarding recipes.
  • Prepare food service facilities for the serving of food.
  • Minimize waste.
  • Operate standard kitchen equipment and follow proper procedures.
  • Assure that serving lines are properly stocked with adequate food, beverages, and supplies.
  • Serve food from steam table or cold counter.
  • Coordinate Nutrition Services operations of a school kitchen and cafeteria.
  • Lead the preparation, display, service, and sales of food to students and staff.
  • Direct the work of Nutrition Services Assistants at the site; plan work schedules and coordinate daily work for efficient use of labor.
  • Oversee inventory and procurement functions for the site; complete weekly forecasts for ordering and submit orders in Nutrition Services software; adjust forecasting as needed to minimize waste.
  • Plan meal production according to weekly forecasts and adjust as needed.
  • Follow HACCP SOPs for food safety and sanitation in receiving, storage, preparation, and disposal of leftovers; maintain cleaning and safety standards.
  • Inspect kitchen and cafeteria areas daily to ensure health, safety, and sanitation compliance.
  • Monitor and inspect equipment operation and report concerns.
  • Work with District nurses, parents, and NS Supervisors to update and monitor status of students with documented special diet needs.
  • Maintain records for forecasting, ordering, production, inventory, meal and sales accounting, and temperature logs.
  • Inspect food and supply deliveries, verify quantity, quality, and specifications.
  • Oversee batch cooking as needed daily.
  • Communicate with students, staff, faculty, and outside organizations to exchange information, receive suggestions, respond to inquiries, and resolve issues related to food service.
  • Train and assist Nutrition Assistants in proper handling of foods, correct use and care of equipment, and high sanitation and safety standards.
  • Schedule and facilitate periodic kitchen staff meetings.
  • Perform cashier functions using NS software : enter meal accounting and sales data, verify payments, close and reconcile tills.
  • Ensure staff rotation through kitchen positions to maintain cross-training.
  • Participate in special events such as back-to-school nights, field days, and promotions.
  • Perform duties of other nutrition services positions as needed to ensure adequate staff coverage.
  • Prepare documentation (production records, staff training, performance, timesheets) to provide written support and inform stakeholders.
  • Participate in required hours of annual continuing education per federal law.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with department peers, other school personnel, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Comply with Beaverton School District policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have lead / manager training to provide direction and planning for Nutrition Services programs in elementary / smaller service models.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Must pass a required physical examination.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English; follow multi-step instructions in English; perform basic math.
  • Must possess a valid Food Handlers Card.
  • Must be able to record data.
  • Must possess 20 / 40 vision in each eye (uncorrected or corrected).
  • Must be able to attend mandatory trainings outside of regular hours.
  • Must have basic computer skills (email, word processing, spreadsheets).
  • Working Conditions

    The Lead I works primarily in an industrial school kitchen and in the cafeteria. The environment may be loud with exposure to hot surfaces, steam, cold temperatures, cleaning solvents, and equipment hazards. Frequent standing / walking; moderate to fast-paced movement to meet timelines.

    Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 10 lbs constantly; up to 20 lbs frequently; up to 50 lbs occasionally; carry loads up to 15 feet.
  • Push / pull up to 75 lbs intermittently; climb step stools occasionally; bend, twist, kneel, crouch as needed; reach and handle items; use both hands constantly.
  • Seeing, hearing, smelling, and speaking requirements to perform duties and communicate effectively.
