We are looking for an ambitious and innovative Development Engineer to join our team in the Engineering Department.
The role will report into the Engineering R&D Manager and will be based from our offices in Spartan, Kempton Park.
Purpose of the role
- To discover, develop and evaluate new product ideas, enhancements to existing products or strategic product extensions, and translate research discoveries into usable and marketable products.
The job responsibilities
Appraise new product ideas to determine their potential to address customer needs and to achieve goals in revenue growth and market share.Design, validate and bring new products to market.Specify precise new product functional requirements; design, test and integrate components to produce final designs; and evaluate the design’s overall effectiveness, cost, reliability and safety.Design, develop, execute and evaluate fitness‑for‑use testing, product specifications and process validation plans; create and review material part specifications and bills of materials.Collaborate with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers and product specialists to optimize designs for manufacturability.Work closely with Manufacturing management to ensure design and manufacturing details follow best practices, including making parts easy to assemble, ensuring welding is accessible, checking the availability of steel sections, considering plate bending, and organizing the bill of materials.Utilize CAD (Computer Aided Design) or CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) systems to model new designs and produce detailed engineering drawings.Respond to complex technical questions regarding the organization’s product, system or service.Pre‑ include analysing customer technical needs and suggesting solutions.Assist in developing and presenting training material when needed.Travel and meet with customers when required, including on‑site measurements.Ensure that all work conforms to the required in‑house modelling and detailing standards.Perform sufficient checking of drawings and BOMs to eliminate NCRs.Participate in generating new in‑house technical standards and training material.Develop and maintain engineering calculations to assist in product design as needed.Assist in performing engineering first‑principle calculations.Manage and assist in performing engineering structural integrity and dynamic calculations and conduct test and measurement exercises using advanced technology.Check the designer’s design intent at the initial phase of projects to identify potential weaknesses in the designs.ETO and R&D resources can be shared across teams on a case‑by‑case basis to support both regional and global functions based on workload and agreement between departmental managers.Qualifications & Experience Requirements
BEng, Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering.MEng, Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (advantage).3–5 years of advanced 3D CAD modelling, drafting and FEA experience in sheet metal fabrication industries, including welding specifications.Good test & measurement experience with field or lab testing.Preferred experience in a previous R&D role.Proficient in Siemens NX & Teamcenter software packages. Solid Edge and other CAD software are a benefit.Other Requirements & Competencies
Proficient in Python or a similar programming language.Finite Element Analysis simulation experience.Multibody dynamics simulation experience (benefit).Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.Fluent in English; additional languages are a benefit.Ability to work with numbers and figures across diverse levels of complexity.Strong communication skills for conveying information clearly and effectively.Proactive with a focus on continuous improvement and solution‑oriented actions.Excellent time‑management and resource‑allocation skills.Commitment to maintaining high performance standards and accountability.What is in it for you?
