Job description

Well established company based in Zwelitsha are looking for a dynamic and experienced applicant to join their team.

The Fruit and Veg Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the fruit and vegetable department. This includes managing inventory, ensuring the quality of produce, coordinating with suppliers, and leading a team to deliver excellent customer service. The goal is to maximize sales, ensure freshness and maintain an attractive and organized department.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Inventory Management :

Monitor and manage stock levels to ensure optimal inventory

  • Order and replenish stock based on sales trends and seasonal availability
  • Track and manage spoilage, waste, and shrinkage
  • Quality Control :
  • Ensure that all fruits and vegetables meet quality standards

  • Regularly inspect produce for freshness, ripeness and overall quality
  • Implement and enforce proper handling and storage practices to maintain product quality
  • Vendor Coordination :
  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and vendors

  • Negotiate prices and terms with suppliers to ensure cost-effectiveness
  • Stay informed about market trends and seasonal variations in produce
  • Team Leadership :
  • Hire, train and supervise department staff

  • Schedule shifts and manage staff performance
  • Foster a positive work environment and promote teamwork
  • Sales and Customer Service :
  • Develop and implement sales strategies to boost department performance

  • Address customer inquiries, feedback and complaints in a professional manner
  • Ensure that produce displays are attractive and effectively marketed
  • Compliance and Safety :
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and store policies

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the department
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure adherence to standards
  • Reporting and Administration :
  • Prepare and analyse reports on sales, inventory and performance metrics

  • Assist in budget planning and cost control
  • Handle administrative tasks such as ordering, receiving and documenting inventory
  • Qualifications :

  • Education : Grade 12 or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, retail management or a related field preferred
  • Experience : Previous experience in retail management, particularly in fresh produce, is highly desirable
  • Skills : Strong leadership and team management skills, excellent customer service abilities and proficiency in inventory management systems
  • Knowledge : Understanding of produce quality standards, supply chain processes and market trends
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy items (boxes of produce)
  • Capable of standing for extended periods and working in various environmental conditions (coolers)
  • Typically works in a retail environment with exposure to varying temperatures and physical demands
