Manager : Data Scientist (6-Month Contract)

Fintech is entering a new phase where operational and commercial excellence has become critical for success. We at MTN believe this is a game changer in terms of our business strategy. We are looking at an incumbent to join us as we build a successful business together.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Manager : Data Platform Engineering in establishing and leading the Data Function at MTN MoMo, implementing a strategic approach to data management, governance, monetization, and analytics across 16 markets in Africa
  • Provide support in the structuring MTN MoMo’s corporate data model, ensuring alignment with regulatory frameworks, enabling business growth through data-driven insights, and optimizing the value of 65 million monthly active customers and 15 billion annual transactions across multiple business verticals, including lending, insurance, remittances, e-commerce, and marketplace services
  • Be the subject matter expert in Data Science and Advanced Analytics

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4-year Academic Degree with Honours (Computer Science, Data Science, or related Degree Preferred)
  • Proven experience (5+ years) in Advanced Data & Analytics and Data Science
  • At least 3 years’ experience within a non-traditional FinTech or Consumer Marketing environment
  • Exposure to digital technologies in the space of APIs, ecommerce, and advanced analytics
  • Proven track record of technical and specialised know-how in the FinTech operations management space and understanding of platform business model
  • Hands‑on experience with Big Data technologies (Hadoop, Spark, AWS, Azure, GCP), AI / ML, data lakes, and BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker)
  • Strong technical skills in data manipulation, analysis, and visualization tools such as SQL, Python, R, Tableau, or Power BI
  • Big Data On‑premises and Cloud Data Pipeline (M. Fabric) deployment exposure
  • Experience at the management level in the financial sector
  • Strong knowledge of data privacy laws and compliance frameworks relevant to Africa
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into actionable insights for non‑technical audiences
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights and strategic recommendations
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, self‑driven and ability to motivate a fast‑paced team

    • Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Computer Science, Big Data, Database Administration
  • Experience in the telecommunications / Financial Services or Fintech Companies or related fields
  • API Development and Deployment exposure
  • Willing and flexible to travel within Africa and Middle East
  • French language proficiency
