The Working Project Manager will take full responsibility for planning, coordinating, and managing all on-site construction activities to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
This is a hands-on, site-based leadership role, with a strong emphasis on meeting the petrochemical industry’s stringent safety and compliance requirements.
The role involves direct oversight of multidisciplinary teams, proactive problem-solving, and close collaboration with engineering and compliance stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution from mobilisation through to final handover.
Responsibilities :
- Facilitate communication between all stakeholders, including clients, third parties and subcontractors.
- Coordinate and manage resources, including personnel, materials, and equipment.
- Manage project supply chain and logistics.
- Oversee and manage full lifecycle of construction projects (design (where required), planning, execution, and delivery)
- Develop detailed project plans, set timelines, and establish milestones
- Plan and execute project schedules, including short-term look-ahead planning and resource allocation.
- Oversee site setup, mobilization, and readiness, ensuring permits, licenses, and infrastructure are in place.
- Monitor progress, track schedules, and maintain accurate daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
- Ensure quality and compliance through regular inspections, QA / QC checks, and safety audits.
- Enforce compliance with SHEQ and Construction Regulations, including permit-to-work systems.
- Administer contracts, manage subcontractor performance, manage change orders and compensation events, and adjust project scope as needed.
- Identify and mitigate risks through ongoing assessments and contingency planning.
- Maintain budget oversight and cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead and manage multidisciplinary site teams and subcontractors to ensure efficient daily operations.
- Liaise with clients, engineers, and stakeholders to ensure clear communication and challenge resolution.
- Manage project close-out, including as-built documentation, commissioning, and handover.
- Provide regular updates to stakeholders on project progress, challenges and budget status.
- Lead and motivate teams, delegate tasks, and foster a collaborative work environment.
Requirements
Higher National Diploma or Degree in Construction Management, Civil / Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.Minimum of 5 years’ experience in construction project management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role within petrochemical, oil & gas, or heavy industrial environments.Strong knowledge of South African construction laws, SHEQ requirements, and permit-to-work processes.Proficiency in project management software (MS Project) and ability to interpret engineering drawings (P&IDs, layouts).Solid understanding of contract administration, risk management, and quality control procedures.Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to perform in high-pressure environments.Professional registration with SACPCMP or ECSA is advantageous.PMP, PMBoK, or other project management certifications are beneficial.Valid South African driver’s license and willingness to travel to sites in and around South AfricaKnowledge :
