National Consultant : Strengthening Nutrition Education through the Nutrition School Ambassadors (NUSA) Initiative, Pretoria, South Africa (Remote)
UNICEF South Africa’s Health and Nutrition Section invites experienced consultants to support the implementation of the Nutrition School Ambassadors (NUSA) initiative, a child‑centred, peer‑led programme aimed at strengthening nutrition education and improving the school food environment across the country.
Overview
The NUSA initiative builds on UNICEF’s Nutrition Education (NE) pillar of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP). Consultants will partner with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to develop curriculum‑linked nutrition content, facilitate young‑people‑led advocacy, and design monitoring frameworks to ensure sustainable behaviour change among learners.
Responsibilities
- Write an inception report outlining methodology, work plan, and timelines.
- Review and update existing nutrition education materials to align with the national curriculum and the NSNP NE pillar.
- Provide technical and strategic support for learner‑led advocacy, including capacity building of NUSA members.
- Conduct orientation and sensitisation workshops in five provinces (Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape, and North‑West) for provincial and district DBE management teams.
- Build capacity of NUSA members in identified schools.
- Lead four supportive monitoring visits to the five provinces.
- Co‑create a comprehensive package of information materials (social media tiles, blog posts, radio / TV scripts, surveys, quizzes).
- Collaborate with Fix My Food advocates to support provincial advocacy initiatives.
- Develop and implement a monitoring and evaluation framework for the NUSA programme.
- Prepare a complete written report on achievements, lessons learned, and final evaluation for UNICEF.
Deliverables
Key outputs include : an inception report; revised and approved nutrition education toolkit; five orientation workshops with consolidated reports; capacity‑building reports for NUSA members; monitoring visit reports; an M&E framework; and a final comprehensive report.
Qualifications
Advanced degree (MPH, MSc, or equivalent) in Public Health, Nutrition, Education, or related field.Minimum five years of relevant experience in public health, nutrition, or social and behaviour change communication.Demonstrated experience with child‑and‑adolescent‑nutrition programmes, food systems, and NCD prevention.Strong knowledge of youth engagement and advocacy in education settings.Experience developing capacity‑building materials (e.g., manuals, job aids).Skills
Proven project management and coordination abilities.Strong writing, facilitation, and communication skills.Advanced computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); familiarity with design tools such as Canva or Photoshop is desirable.Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including youth, government and civil society.Knowledge of South African education and health systems is highly desirable.Language Requirements
Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.Working knowledge of additional official South African languages is an advantage.Desirables
Expertise in social and behaviour change communication campaigns.Knowledge of nutrition, food systems, health promotion, and NCD prevention.Application
