Job description

Job Purpose

To lecture and contribute to curriculum development in the Department of Horticultural Sciences while providing support to the department in pursuit of its objectives in teaching and learning, work‑based learning, community engagement and research outputs.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Masters in Ornamental Horticulture or equivalent.

Base qualification in Ornamental Horticulture or equivalent.

At least two years’ relevant working experience of which one year must be in teaching.

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

  • Teach the subjects at Diploma Horticulture and Diploma Landscape Architecture level, including Plant Material Studies 1, Plant Material Studies 2, Plant material studies 3, Horticulture integrated Project 3, Workplace Based learning.
  • Provide appropriate academic and administrative duties in the Department.
  • Perform student assessment.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance activities of the Department.
  • Monitor and assess Workplace based learning.
  • Placing of workplace Base Learning students in industry.
  • Develop and maintain linkages with industry and professional bodies.
  • Assist with marketing and recruitment activities.
  • Manage and co‑ordinate the integrated projects subjects, prepare study materials and co‑ordinate part‑time.
  • Mentor student assistants and tutors.
  • Perform other functions as may be assigned by the Head of Department.
  • Competence in horticultural technologies of ornamental nursery production.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Continuous learning.

  • Communication and coaching skills.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Teamwork.
  • Practical knowledge and experience in the horticultural field.
  • Be able to maintain existing industry partners that the department has with respect to WPBL placements and to develop new placements in industry.
