Deputy Director, Strategy, Planning & Management - HIV / TB Delivery

Your Role
This is an exciting DDSPM role uniquely scoped to balance program-specific leadership, regional integration, and cross-geography collaboration to maximize the Foundation’s impact on eradicating infectious diseases.
- Program Strategy Team (PST) : Focus on HIV and TB delivery within the PST, ensuring seamless integration of delivery and R&D strategies. Lead the strategic, financial, operational, and human resource aspects of the TB & HIV Delivery team; provide senior business, investment, and management expertise to portfolio, domain, and investment-level decision-making; oversee annual strategy reviews, annual planning, reporting processes, and investment pipeline management. Lead a team of business and operations professionals.
- Africa Business Team : Anchor the Foundation’s second priority in Africa, ensuring delivery efforts in Africa are central to the global commitment to eradicating infectious diseases.
- Global Collaboration : Collaborate with colleagues in Seattle, India, and China to align planning, reporting, and execution across geographies; foster a “one team” culture for shared learning and coordinated global action.
The DDSPM will report to the Director, TB & HIV Delivery and the Africa Director.
What You’ll Do
Strategy development, refinement and managementDirect planning process, establish annual priorities for TB&HIV R&D, ensure alignment with Africa Business Team and global counterparts.
Provide ongoing strategy development, process monitoring, and evaluation of function and core processes as a strategic partner to the Director and program staff.Align team work with strategy and implementation plans; design analytics to define strategy metrics and targets; continuously refine data, metrics, and models.Lead or co-lead complex cross-functional strategic projects; communicate portfolio allocation, progress, and Africa’s contribution to eradicating infectious diseases.Team development and people managementPartner with HR and program teams to recruit, develop and train staff supporting the strategic plan; manage rhythm of the business and team meetings.
Promote culture, values, team effectiveness, and conduct regular team health checks; design organization structure, facilitate retreats and cross-organization collaboration.Monitor succession planning, team performance and development; support the Director with workforce planning.Shape and strengthen the Integrated Africa Business Team and facilitate learning across disease areas.Portfolio and financial management and advising on investmentsDevelop PST budgets and forecasts with Finance; maintain PST’s grant and contracts pipeline.
Provide data-driven investment advice to program officers; develop and manage major grants and ensure alignment with strategy.Define success metrics for strategy, portfolio, and grants; ensure investment pipelines reflect HIV / TB priorities and Africa perspectives while incorporating global learning.Trusted advisor to DirectorsAct as a sounding board for topics affecting program management; connect priorities with Africa and global collaboration strategies.
Provide insight on how HIV / TB delivery connects with Africa Team strategies and global efforts.Cross-foundation / cross-division improvementLead the DEI Action Plan in alignment with division and foundation priorities; contribute to cross-foundation and cross-GH DDSPM practices; collaborate with global colleagues to standardize methodologies; support new processes and change management initiatives.
Your Experience
MBA or equivalent; 15+ years in business strategy, development, public health, life sciences, or general management.Strong technical and financial proficiency; experience in business plans, budgets, and financial reporting.Deep knowledge of strategy development and performance management systems; experience in global health is a plus.Experience with pharmaceutical product development and health program delivery; strong problem-solving and strategic planning abilities.Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly; leadership experience with diverse teams and senior decision-makers.Willingness to travel up to 30% domestically and internationally; legal work authorization in the country of location (South Africa based).Other Attributes
