Overview

CXI Bellville, Western Cape, South Africa

Senior Data Manager

As a Senior Data Manager, you’ll lead the way in shaping how data drives strategy, growth, and performance across a dynamic group of companies. This is a high-impact leadership role where you’ll turn complex commercial, customer, and industry data into clear insights that influence decision-making at the highest level.

You’ll own the data vision—building modern platforms (warehouse, lake, cloud), driving innovation with AI/ML, and ensuring data is secure, scalable, and business-ready. Working closely with executives and stakeholders, you’ll have a direct hand in guiding strategy through data.

This is also your chance to build and develop a talented data team, lead the full data lifecycle, and introduce tools and technologies that unlock new value for the business. If you’re looking to make a real impact and set the standard for data excellence, this role is for you.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of data professionals (Data Analysts, Data Engineers), fostering a collaborative environment focused on continuous learning, improvement, and innovation.
  • Structure the team and mentor members to enhance their skills and promote knowledge-sharing across the department.
  • Oversee recruitment, training, and professional development to build a high-performing data team.
  • Work closely with Commercial, Operations, and Sales teams to understand data needs and translate them into actionable solutions.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive data strategy that aligns with the company’s broader business objectives.
  • Ensure that the data strategy drives the company’s long-term vision, particularly in areas like energy trading, customer behaviour analysis, and pricing strategies.
  • Oversee the integration of commercial data, customer data, and industry-specific data (including meter readings and energy consumption metrics).
  • Manage the end-to-end integration, modelling, and analysis of these data streams, ensuring seamless data flow across the organisation.
  • Ensure that all data sources are harmonised to create comprehensive, actionable business insights.
  • Lead the creation, optimisation, and deployment of data models and algorithms, with a focus on both real-time and historical data.
  • Drive the development of predictive models and analytical frameworks to forecast market trends, customer behaviours, and energy demand.
  • Collaborate with Commercial Analysts and Product owners to build and implement algorithms that drive dynamic pricing, energy demand forecasting, and strategic decision-making.
  • Own the company’s data warehouse and data lake architecture, ensuring they are scalable, performant, and aligned with business goals.
  • Oversee the integration of diverse datasets into the data warehouse and data lake, ensuring data quality, integrity, and accessibility.
  • Leverage Microsoft Fabric and other relevant technologies to optimise these data environments for efficient processing and real-time analytics.
  • Develop and maintain interactive dashboards and BI reports that provide actionable insights to senior leadership.
  • Ensure data-driven insights are easily accessible and presented clearly to support critical decision-making.
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify key metrics and KPIs to measure business performance and guide long-term strategies.
  • Ensure the integrity, security, and compliance of all data systems, adhering to industry standards for data governance and information security.
  • Implement and enforce data governance frameworks that protect sensitive commercial, customer, and industry data.
  • Manage data privacy and ensure compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., GDPR, industry standards).
  • Partner with senior leaders and work with SMEs across Commercial, Operations, and other departments to understand needs and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Provide actionable, data-driven insights to senior leadership for energy trading, pricing strategies, and market trends.
  • Act as the key liaison between the data team and other business units, ensuring alignment between business objectives and data initiatives.
  • Lead the evolution of the company’s data infrastructure, ensuring technologies evolve with industry advancements and organisational needs.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate emerging technologies, tools, and platforms to optimise data management, analysis, and reporting capabilities.
  • Champion the adoption of new tools and methodologies, including machine learning, advanced analytics, and AI, to uncover insights that were previously hidden.
  • Implement and refine data workflows to optimise operational efficiency, reduce redundancies, and streamline decision-making across departments.
  • Ensure data systems support real-time processing for mission-critical operations such as trading and pricing.
  • Continuously assess and improve data processes to meet the needs of operational and strategic functions.
  • Provide senior leadership with strategic insights that inform decision-making in energy trading, hedging, pricing, and other key commercial areas.
  • Leverage data to uncover opportunities, address challenges, and drive growth and profitability.
  • Ensure data-driven insights guide long-term business strategy development.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant Experience: At least 5 years of experience in data management or data analytics, with a solid understanding of data architecture, data modelling, and overseeing data-driven projects.
  • Leadership experience in managing and developing a team of data professionals.
  • Strong experience in data modelling for both transactional and analytical databases, designing models that meet business requirements.
  • Expertise in ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to manage complex data integration tasks.
  • Experience working with commercial data (e.g., pricing, forecasting, modelling financial assertions, prototype products) to drive business insights and strategic decisions.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with business stakeholders across functions to understand data needs and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Practical experience using Microsoft data technologies (e.g., Azure, Power BI, SQL Server) or similar tools to build and optimise data systems.
  • Practical experience in AI and machine learning for developing predictive models and automating data-driven decision-making.
