SUMMARY:
The Process Safety Practitioner is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and coordinating the implementation and execution of risk- mitigation strategies or controls in operational processes.

POSITION INFO:

Key performance area

1.Risk Based Process Safety Management (RBPSM).

  • Oversee and coordinate the PSM implementation program throughout the organization to ensure its sustainability.
  • Monitor process safety leading and lagging indicators and facilitate interventions to ensure continuous improvement and compliance.
  • Participating in and support teams conducting process hazard analysis/study (PHA) and ad hoc risk assessments and ensure that methodologies such as HAZOP, PHR, LOPA, SIL, BOWTie, LOC, Fault/Event Tree, Human Factors, Inherent Safer Design, Explosion modelling and Risk Ranking are used accordingly.
  • Facilitate pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR) when plant modifications are made, and ensure that management of change is done, assist in compiling next required steps and reports.
  • Conduct incident investigations and analysis using appropriate techniques, compile reports, lessons learned and share the outcomes with relevant stakeholders.
  • Identify, analyze, and assess the effectiveness of both preventative (proactive) and recovery (reactive) barriers that control risks.
  • Identify the impact of proposed or actual process changes and assess the consequences.
  • Develop plant-specific PSM procedures and checklists based on standards, processes, specifications, and recommendations.
  • Analyze process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and other engineering documents to ensure compliance with RBPSM requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of process risk assessments.

2. SHERQ Management systems.

  • Ensure that the PTW and LOTO system meets all safety requirements established by NCP Chlorchem and that any safety deviations are corrected.
  • Provide input in the design, development and maintenance of the PSM system.
  • Recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employees'' exposure to work hazards.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to safety and process safety incidents.
  • Provide coaching to plants on identification and resolution of process safety issues.
  • Ensure that contractor(s) comply with the PSM policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in external environmental forums: EIA, CAER, and CAIA Forums.
  • Respond to queries relating to non-conformance raised during internal and external audits within the specified time frames as requested by the customer, certification management body, CAIA, or suppliers.
  • Assist in the consolidation of environmental KPI data for CAIA reporting.

3. Continuous Improvement and Monitoring.

  • Track the performance indicators, corrective actions, and improvement opportunities for PSM.
  • Sharing process safety information and providing operational knowledge support to line management.
  • Update and maintain reactive chemicals pack for each process unit.
  • Assist operations with PSM technical aspects and interpret PSM standards as required.
  • Compile a historical pack for all PS tier 1 and 2 incidents with root causes, corrective action and lessons learned for easy reference and to prevent future incidents.
  • Communicate and drive PSM awareness on site.

4. Legal Compliance and adherence to MHI.

  • Ensure that the PSM elements are implemented, monitored, and reviewed according to the regulatory and industry requirements.
  • Analyze MHI regulation requirements, identify gaps and facilitate with the closing out of actions from MHI studies and gap analysis.
  • Provide input in the design, development and maintenance of the PSM system.
  • Participate in MHI risk assessment reviews and provide input where required.

  • Expertise in risk assessment methodologies like HAZOP, What-If analysis, and FMEA.
  • Ability to interpret technical / hazard / operational data and apply the appropriate risk assessment methods and expertise.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain PSM & SHERQ topics

Experience

  • Minimum 1 - 3 years Chemical Manufacturing Environment.
  • Minimum 3 years Process Safety Management Environment.

Qualifications:

  • Matric with Science and Mathematics.
  • National Diploma/ Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering studies.
  • Chemical Process Technology.

Certifications/Training:

  • Risk Based Process Safety Management Training/ Process Safety Management Training.
  • Fundamentals of Process Safety
  • HAZOP facilitation
  • ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 accreditation training (Advantage).

Reporting structure:

This position reports to the Business SHERQ Manager

Personal Circumstances:

  • Must be able to obtain a satisfactory medical report from the companies’ medical centre.
