Medical Technician – Histopathology (Histotechnician)

Role Overview

NL is seeking a qualified and registered medical technician to service a routine histopathology workflow. The successful candidate will be involved in the processing of samples, maintenance of laboratory equipment and upholding quality assurance standards.

Qualifications and Registration

• Active registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Technician - Histopathology
• Valid driver's licence - Code B (Historic: Code 8). Code C1 - Advantageous (Historic: Code 10)
• Strong foundation in Medical Technology and Laboratory Medicine, with experience in histopathology techniques and workflows

Key Responsibilities - Laboratory

• Collect and receive samples in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and log relevant data while maintaining chain of custody
• Process samples including put-through, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining
• Maintenance of laboratory equipment
• Ensure all quality assurance procedures are upheld to produce valid and reliable results
• Prepare all relevant reagents and perform stock maintenance
• Document control and preparation of SOPs
• Train staff members
• File, archive, and retrieve sample material and documents
• Routine upkeep and cleaning of laboratory and associated workstations

Key Responsibilities - Administration and Operations

• Manage and organise physical and digital records
• Capture and update data accurately in laboratory and administrative systems
• Attend to incoming calls, emails, and correspondence professionally
• Schedule meetings and maintain departmental calendars
• Receive and direct visitors, deliveries, and couriers
• Schedule and roster staff shifts and duties
• Perform stock control and audits of laboratory and office supplies
• Manage equipment maintenance schedules and maintain service records

Skills and Competencies

• Proficiency in written and spoken English communication
• Computer literacy - proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; email communication, database management, and ability to learn/implement new software applications
• Ability and willingness to work within a team and participate in group activities
• Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure
