Our client in the Precious Metals industry seeks a reliable Laboratory Assistant to join their growing team at their premises on the East Rand. This position is available to all applicants with a valid matric and upwards, but preference will be given to those with further, suitable qualifications or experience in a similar role (sample preparation, fire assays, etc.). Ideally, candidates should be located reasonably close to the laboratory in order to avoid travel delays. It should be noted that this role requires frequent heavy lifting and includes exposure to very high temperatures.

POSITION INFO:
What youâll be doing

• Prepare samples through drying, crushing, milling, screening and splitting.
• Determine and record moisture content for accurate sample analysis.
• Weigh samples with precision for processing.
• Capture and manage sample data using the Laboratory Information System (LIMS).
• Assist with fire assay procedures, including weighing, fluxing, fusion and cupellation.
• Handle lead buttons and collect precious metal beads.
• Accurately weigh and document final assay results.
• Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the laboratory environment.
• Adhere to all health, safety and environmental protocols.
• Always use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
• Support laboratory team members with routine tasks and quality control.

What youâll need

Experience and Qualifications:

• Matric (Mathematics and Science subjects preferred).
• Certificate or higher in a suitable field would be an advantage.
• Previous experience in a mining or mineral laboratory environment (advantageous).
• Experience in fire assay processes (highly advantageous).
• Basic computer literacy and experience with data entry and lab software.

Skills:

• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to follow strict procedures and safety protocols.
• Good understanding of laboratory practices.
• Physically fit and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Reliable, punctual and team orientated.
• Good communication and recordkeeping skills.
