Job Description

The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting functions and financial reporting within the organisation, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and internal policies. This role specifically focuses on supporting the environmental and waste sector, providing accurate financial information to aid strategic decision-making and promote sustainable business practises. The successful candidate contributes to financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes whilst maintaining the integrity of financial data.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with relevant accounting standards and legislation.
• Manage and oversee general ledger accounting, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded and reconciled.
• Coordinate the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely completion and accuracy of financial reports.
• Conduct variance analysis and provide insightful commentary on financial performance to management.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management to support operational and strategic planning.
• Ensure compliance with tax legislation, including VAT, income tax and other statutory requirements specific to the environmental and waste industry.
• Liaise with external auditors and regulatory authorities during audits and inspections.
• Implement and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accuracy of financial data.
• Support the preparation of financial reports for stakeholders, including board members and regulatory bodies.
• Provide guidance and support to junior accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and professional team environment.
• Stay up to date with changes in financial regulations, accounting standards and industry best practises.

Required Qualifications

• Professional accounting qualification (such as Chartered Accountant or equivalent).
• Recognised tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.

Experience

• Minimum of five years experience in an accounting role, with at least two years in a senior or supervisory capacity.
• Experience within the environmental, waste management or related sectors is highly desirable.
• Demonstrable experience in financial reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination.

Knowledge and Skills

• Strong understanding of South African Generally Accepted Accounting Practise (SA GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
• Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
• Organisational skills with the capacity to work independently as well as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
• Experience using environmental or waste industry-specific financial systems.
• Knowledge of environmental regulations impacting financial reporting.
• Additional professional certifications related to risk management or internal controls.

Working Conditions

• The role is based in an office environment within the Johannesburg Metro area.
