Landfill Manager – Vaal Triangle

Our client, a leading organisation within the waste management and environmental services sector, is seeking an experienced Landfill Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of a Class A landfill site.

The successful candidate will ensure that all activities are conducted safely, efficiently and in full compliance with environmental legislation, the sites Waste Management Licence and applicable regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage the daily operations of the Class A landfill site.
• Forecast, monitor and manage operational expenditure and budgets.
• Plan and allocate manpower, materials and equipment effectively.
• Build, lead and develop a high-performing operations team.
• Oversee waste reception, classification, acceptance and disposal.
• Ensure maximum diversion of waste from landfill where possible.
• Ensure compliance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act and all relevant regulations, permits and licences.
• Enforce waste acceptance criteria in accordance with GNR 636.
• Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly and annual compliance and performance reports.
• Implement and maintain effective Health, Safety and Environmental management systems.
• Monitor leachate collection, leak detection and landfill gas management systems.
• Maintain accurate operational, environmental and compliance records.
• Liaise with regulatory authorities, contractors and other relevant stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelors degree in Environmental Engineering or an equivalent relevant qualification.
• Minimum of five years experience in a similar operational environment.
• At least three years experience in a managerial position.
• Previous landfill management experience will be highly advantageous.
• Valid drivers licence.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Sage.
• Knowledge of Integrated Management Systems, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

Essential Technical Knowledge

• Comprehensive knowledge of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act.
• Knowledge of waste classification and management regulations.
• Understanding of landfill permitting and compliance requirements.
• Knowledge of double composite liner systems, including HDPE and clay liners.
• Understanding of GNR 635 waste assessments, including total concentration and leachable concentration thresholds.
• Knowledge of waste acceptance criteria under GNR 636.
• Experience with leachate collection and leak detection systems.
• Knowledge of landfill gas management requirements under GNR 924.
• Familiarity with geotechnical investigations relating to liner and foundation design.
• Competence in environmental monitoring and compliance reporting.
