Employment Type:Fixed-Term Contract (Project Duration: 3–5 Years)
Experience Level:Senior (Extensive background in large-scale infrastructure/mining projects)
Salary:Highly Competitive and Market-Related (Directly related to experience; premium rates for the right candidate)
Job Purpose
The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for the end-to-end execution of critical mining infrastructure, capital expansion, and operational projects throughout a major 3–5 year project lifecycle within an underground Platinum Group Metals (PGM) mining environment. This is a distinctly hands-on, "boots-on-the-ground" role requiring a dynamic leader to be highly active on-site—driving engineering teams, supervising contractors, and ensuring multi-million Rand project phases are delivered safely, on time, and strictly within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Hands-On Project Execution: Direct daily on-site project operations, actively monitoring construction, engineering installations, commissioning phases, and surface/underground infrastructure developments.
- Lifecycle Schedule Management: Define precise project scopes, develop detailed integrated master schedules, and implement robust tracking mechanisms to ensure the 3–5 year project milestones are hit without scope creep.
- Contractor and Vendor Management: Oversee and manage external contractors, consultants, and suppliers, enforcing strict quality control, timeline adherence, and SLA compliance.
- Financial and Risk Management: Meticulously track and control project expenditure against approved CAPEX budgets, proactively identify potential project bottlenecks or risks, and execute swift mitigation strategies.
- Cross-Functional Integration: Interface smoothly with Mine Management, Engineering, Geology, Procurement, and operational teams to ensure seamless project handover and minimal disruption to ongoing production.
- Safety Leadership: Foster a strict zero-harm culture across all project sites, ensuring all contractors and project activities fully comply with the South African Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and corporate safety frameworks.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Academic Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree, BTech, or Advanced Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Mining Engineering) or a dedicated Project Management degree.
- Professional Certifications: Professional Project Management registration (e.g., PMP or Prince2) is highly desirable. Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration with ECSA is an advantage.
- Professional Experience: Extensive, proven background managing heavy infrastructure, structural, or capital expansion projects specifically within a mining environment from initiation through to final closeout. Experience in the South African PGM (Platinum Group Metals) sector is highly advantageous.
- Contractual Knowledge: Deep, practical familiarity with managing standard engineering contracts, particularly NEC3/NEC4 or FIDIC frameworks.
Key Skills and Competencies
- "Boots-on-the-Ground" Leadership: A proactive, visible leadership style with a proven track record of managing and motivating diverse construction and engineering teams in high-pressure environments.
- Project Controls and Engineering Software: Strong proficiency in project management software specifically Primavera P6 and the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Commercial and Financial Acumen: Exceptional skills in budget forecasting, cost engineering, contract negotiation, and dispute resolution.
- Strategic Problem Solving: Strong critical thinking capacity to resolve technical project delays and adapt schedules effectively when facing unpredictable operational challenges.
- Stakeholder Management: Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively align project targets with executive management expectations and on-site mining teams.
