RPG Developer - Onsite only

Description

We are seeking an experienced RPG Developer for a 12-month subcontract engagement (renewable) based in Sandton, Johannesburg. This is a work-from-office role.

The ideal candidate will have deep IBM i (AS/400) development experience and be comfortable working on high-volume transaction ledgers, integrations, and legacy-to-modernization initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain RPG applications using RPG IV (ILE), SQLRPGLE and Free-Format RPG.
• Develop and optimize complex DB2 for i SQL to manage massive transaction ledgers and improve performance.
• Implement and maintain integration solutions using IBM MQ, SFTP, and socket programming for inter-system data exchange.
• Author and maintain service programs and manage activation groups to ensure reliable application behavior.
• Perform code reviews, debugging, and performance tuning for mission-critical systems.
• Collaborate with business analysts, operations, and other development teams to deliver stable releases and timely fixes.
• Follow change control, release management processes, and produce clear technical documentation.
• Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior developers and support incident resolution out of hours when required.
• Be open to learning and supporting ancillary technologies such as .NET, Base24, or Finastra Equations where required.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 to 8+ years of hands-on RPG development experience on IBM i platforms.
• Expert-level experience with RPG IV (ILE), SQLRPGLE, Free-Format RPG and CL (Control Language).
• Advanced experience with DB2 for i and writing complex, high-performance SQL for large transaction sets.
• Proven experience with IBM MQ, SFTP, and socket programming for integrations.
• Deep understanding of fixed-format and free-format coding styles, service programs, and activation groups.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast-paced production environment.
• Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent industry experience preferred.
• Desirable: exposure to .NET, Base24, or Finastra Equations is advantageous.
