System Engineer

System Engineer – Midrand Permanent Position

A leading organisation in the defence sector is seeking an experienced System Engineer to lead systems engineering activities across land and naval domains. The role focuses on translating customer and business requirements into robust engineering solutions and supporting the full product life cycle of complex defence systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead systems engineering activities across multiple defence projects

• Translate client requirements into detailed technical specifications

• Develop and maintain system documentation aligned with industry standards

• Review proposals and ensure technical teams meet contractual obligations

• Support engineering and business development with backlog prioritisation

• Conduct compliance reviews against defence industry standards

• Facilitate communication between engineering and business development teams

• Lead technical reviews and ensure adherence to systems engineering processes

• Prepare accurate technical documentation for proposals

• Perform hands‑on low‑level design work when required

• Contribute across the full product life cycle: concept, prototyping, design for manufacturing, industrialisation, testing, optimisation, safety certification, qualification, and integration

• Act as technical interface to customers

• Coordinate and participate in system integration and qualification testing

Required Competencies

• Strong understanding of defence systems and industry standards

• Extensive systems engineering experience

• Solid grasp of engineering principles for military‑grade systems

• Knowledge of software development and project management processes

• Experience with compliance, quality standards, and defence specifications

• Hands‑on design capability across the full product life cycle

Qualifications & Experience

• B.Eng. in Computer, Electronic, or Mechanical Engineering

• 5+ years systems engineering experience (preferably defence/military)

• 5+ years experience in military system development or environment

• Strong technical understanding of defence products; weapons systems experience advantageous
