Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Planning & Execution

  • Direct and manage project execution and development from inception through to completion and handover.
  • Define project scope, objectives, goals and deliverables in collaboration with senior management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, programmes, schedules and supporting communication documentation.
  • Establish project milestones, deliverables and success criteria.
  • Identify and manage project dependencies and the critical path.
  • Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using appropriate project management tools.
  • Track project progress, milestones and deliverables against agreed programmes.
  • Proactively manage changes in project scope and identify potential risks or crises.
  • Develop and implement appropriate contingency plans where required.
  • Conduct project post-mortems and prepare recommendations identifying successful and unsuccessful project elements.
  • Develop and continuously improve project management practices, processes and tools.

Contract & Commercial Management

  • Maintain sound contractual awareness and working knowledge of JBCC, FIDIC and NEC contracts.
  • Ensure contractual requirements are understood and appropriately managed throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Monitor project commercial and financial performance.
  • Manage project costs, procurement, analysis, appraisal and budgeting.
  • Draft and submit project budget proposals.
  • Recommend and motivate budget amendments where required.
  • Monitor expenditure against approved project budgets.
  • Provide clear financial and project performance reporting to management.

Procurement & Materials Management

  • Co-ordinate procurement activities with relevant internal departments.
  • Ensure materials and equipment are procured in accordance with project requirements and specifications.
  • Source materials and equipment within specification and at the lowest appropriate cost.
  • Co-ordinate the timely availability of materials, equipment and other project resources.
  • Monitor procurement requirements to prevent delays to the project programme.

Resource & Capacity Management

  • Estimate the resources and personnel required to achieve project objectives.
  • Ensure adequate resources are available to meet short- and long-term project commitments.
  • Negotiate with departmental managers for the allocation of internal resources where required.
  • Identify requirements for additional employees, consultants or contractors during the project lifecycle.
  • Delegate project responsibilities and tasks to appropriate personnel.
  • Monitor resource utilisation and address capacity constraints.

Project Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, mentor, motivate and supervise project team members and contractors.
  • Manage and mentor Project Managers, Site Engineers and Supervisors where applicable.
  • Establish clear expectations and accountability for assigned responsibilities.
  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within project teams.
  • Encourage collaboration and co-operation between project personnel, departments, contractors and stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic leadership to regional and project teams as required.

Stakeholder & Client Management

  • Communicate project expectations clearly and timeously to team members and stakeholders.
  • Liaise continuously with clients, contractors, consultants, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain business relationships that are critical to project success.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Encourage co-operation between senior management, clients, subcontractors and internal departments.
  • Maintain a professional, solutions-focused approach to stakeholder and client relationships.

Engineering, Programming & Technical Co-ordination

  • Co-ordinate engineering support required for successful project delivery.
  • Ensure engineering assistance is available and utilised effectively.
  • Ensure effective programming of drawing requirements.
  • Co-ordinate technical information and engineering deliverables with relevant parties.
  • Programme commissioning requirements in accordance with project timelines.
  • Apply appropriate technical MEP and HVAC knowledge throughout project execution.

Monitoring, Reporting & Project Control

  • Develop and deliver project progress reports, proposals, presentations and requirements documentation.
  • Determine the required frequency and content of project status reports.
  • Analyse project results and identify problem areas requiring corrective action.
  • Provide accurate and clear progress reporting to senior management.
  • Report project status, risks, delays, costs and resource requirements.
  • Maintain effective project documentation and records throughout the project lifecycle.

Commissioning & Handover

  • Plan and co-ordinate commissioning activities.
  • Ensure commissioning requirements are incorporated into the overall project programme.
  • Oversee effective final commissioning.
  • Ensure projects are appropriately completed and handed over to the relevant client or stakeholder.
  • Address outstanding project requirements prior to final handover.

Health, Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Health & Safety requirements.
  • Ensure project activities comply with required ISO processes.
  • Promote adherence to project quality standards, procedures and specifications.
  • Ensure project teams and contractors comply with applicable organisational procedures and project requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Qualifications

  • Technical qualification with strong MEP and HVAC knowledge.
  • A Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is preferred.

Experience

  • 510 years' direct project management experience within an MEP or HVAC environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing all aspects of project development and execution.
  • Experience managing projects with a minimum value of approximately R35 million.
  • Demonstrated personnel management experience.
  • Experience managing managers and senior project personnel.
  • Exposure to senior management.
  • Strategic management experience or knowledge.
  • Experience with project cost control, budgeting, procurement and financial reporting.
  • Experience with project commissioning and handover.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Strong MEP and HVAC technical knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of JBCC, FIDIC and NEC contracts.
  • Project planning and scheduling.
  • Project cost management and budgeting.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
