Job description

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Industrial Automation Engineer to lead the design, development and delivery of complex industrial automation projects. The role is responsible for full lifecycle project delivery, from system design and programming through to integration, testing, commissioning and final handover. The position also contributes to strategic process optimisation, software management of change, presales activities and technical governance, while supporting the development of engineering capability through structured mentorship. Key Responsibilities Develop complete industrial automation system architectures incorporating PLCs/DCS, SCADA systems and field instrumentation. Analyse project requirements and design effective automation solutions to support industrial process requirements. Engineer high-quality control logic, HMI/SCADA interfaces and communication networks using Siemens PCS 7, TIA Portal or equivalent platforms. Oversee the integration of field devices, drives and instrumentation in accordance with approved project specifications. Lead and execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning and final site handover activities. Confirm that system hardware and software are correctly configured, interconnected and aligned with approved project designs. Coordinate with site personnel and contractors to ensure installations are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project standards. Conduct signal verification, loop testing and acceptance testing of automation systems. Verify the correct operation of I/O signals, interlocks and safety systems, document discrepancies and ensure identified issues are resolved before final handover. Lead process improvement and energy-efficiency initiatives aligned with business and client KPIs. Ensure automation software changes are controlled and documented in accordance with Software Management of Change (MOC) requirements. Conduct risk assessments and apply relevant ISO, safety and industry requirements. Oversee assigned projects in accordance with the applicable project management framework. Monitor performance against applicable metrics, including billable utilisation, customer satisfaction and professional development targets. Mentor and develop Industrial Automation Engineers through structured mentorship initiatives. Provide technical support to presales and proposal teams, including project scoping and estimation. Participate in the rotational standby schedule and provide urgent support after hours, on weekends and public holidays when required. Minimum Requirements B.Eng or BTech in Electrical, Electronic or Mechatronic Engineering. Minimum of 7 years' experience in industrial automation. Proven experience with Siemens or equivalent PLC, SCADA and DCS platforms. Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring engineering teams. Exposure to industrial automation projects across multiple sectors, including FMCG, mining and water. Experience in PLC programming using platforms such as Siemens TIA Portal, Step 7, PCS 7, Rockwell or Schneider. Experience in SCADA/HMI development using platforms such as WinCC, Ignition or AVEVA. Solid knowledge of industrial network protocols, including Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, Ethernet/IP and other Ethernet-based communication. Knowledge of functional safety and SIL-rated system design. Knowledge of process documentation and ISO project processes. Approximately 1 year of applied experience with Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and soft starters, including setup, tuning and commissioning. Demonstrable understanding of industrial automation system architecture and configuration principles. Proficiency in CAD software, from basic to advanced level, for system design, panel layouts and wiring schematics. Proven experience conducting Factory Acceptance Testing with clients, commissioning activities and final site handovers. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel. Advantageous Experience ECSA registration or eligibility for registration. Siemens TIA Portal and/or PCS 7 certification. Ability to articulate the detailed architecture, configuration and interconnection of Siemens automation systems. Key Competencies Analytical thinking and problem-solving.
