Chemical Engineer - Safety and Compliance

About the Role

Our client is looking for a meticulous Chemical Engineer specializing in safety and regulatory compliance to join their operations in Pretoria . This role is critical in ensuring that all chemical processes and facilities meet or exceed stringent industry safety standards and legal requirements. You will be responsible for conducting risk assessments, developing safety protocols, and overseeing compliance initiatives across multiple sites. This position offers the opportunity to influence safety culture and drive best practices within a significant industrial setting, contributing to a secure and responsible operational framework.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) , including HAZOP and LOPA studies.
• Develop, implement, and maintain safety management systems and procedures.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant national and international safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, COMAH equivalents).
• Investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Develop and deliver safety training programs for operational and engineering staff.
• Perform regular safety audits and inspections of plant operations and equipment.

Requirements

• Degree in Chemical Engineering.
• Minimum 6 years of experience in industrial safety, process safety, or compliance roles.
• In-depth knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles and practices.
• Experience with risk assessment methodologies and tools.
• Familiarity with South African safety legislation and environmental regulations.
• Strong leadership, communication, and auditing skills.
