Legal Counsel - Remote, Energy Sector

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly experienced and self-motivated Legal Counsel to join their dynamic team, supporting operations in the energy sector from a fully remote capacity, with their primary operational base considered Upington. This senior role requires a strategic thinker with extensive experience in energy law, regulatory compliance, and complex contract negotiation. You will provide critical legal advice on project development, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory matters, ensuring the company navigates the evolving energy landscape successfully. Key Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal counsel on all aspects of the energy sector, including project development, financing, and regulatory approvals.
• Draft, negotiate, and manage complex commercial agreements, joint venture agreements, and power purchase agreements (PPAs).
• Ensure compliance with national and international energy regulations, environmental laws, and corporate governance standards.
• Advise on mergers, acquisitions, and other corporate transactions within the energy industry.
• Manage litigation and dispute resolution processes related to energy projects and operations.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external counsel, and regulatory bodies to achieve business objectives.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney with a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience, with a substantial focus on energy law.
• Proven expertise in drafting and negotiating complex contracts within the renewable energy sector.
• Deep understanding of energy industry regulations, policy, and market dynamics.
• Exceptional negotiation skills and experience managing high-stakes legal matters.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities effectively, and deliver results in a remote environment.
• Strong business acumen and the capacity to provide commercially pragmatic legal advice.
