Mine Safety Officer - Underground Operations

About the Role

Our client is looking for a diligent and proactive Mine Safety Officer to join their team overseeing underground mining operations near Polokwane . This role is paramount in ensuring a safe working environment for all personnel by implementing and enforcing stringent safety protocols and regulations. You will conduct regular inspections, identify hazards, investigate incidents, and promote a strong safety culture throughout the mine. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about mining safety legislation and committed to preventing accidents and ensuring the well-being of the workforce.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and monitor the mine's health and safety management system .
• Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of underground and surface operations to identify potential hazards.
• Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions.
• Provide safety training and toolbox talks to all personnel, ensuring understanding and compliance with safety procedures.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable mining health and safety legislation and company policies.
• Promote a positive safety culture and encourage employee participation in safety initiatives.

Requirements

• National Diploma in Safety Management or equivalent qualification.
• SAMTRAC or NEBOSH certification is essential.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Safety Officer in an underground mining environment.
• In-depth knowledge of South African mining safety regulations (e.g., MHSA).
• Strong understanding of risk assessment, incident investigation, and emergency preparedness.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
