Chief Surveyor - Open Pit Operations

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly competent Chief Surveyor to lead their surveying department for open pit mining operations near Nelspruit . This leadership position is responsible for overseeing all surveying activities, ensuring accuracy in mine planning, execution, and reconciliation. You will manage a team of surveyors, implement advanced surveying technologies, and ensure compliance with all statutory and company requirements. This role is crucial for maintaining the precision and efficiency of operations in the Mpumalanga region, supporting strategic decision-making through reliable spatial data.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the mine surveying team, including training, performance management, and work allocation.
• Oversee all aspects of open pit mine surveying, including topographic mapping, boundary definition, and volume calculations.
• Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all survey data and mine plans.
• Implement and maintain the latest surveying technologies and methodologies (e.g., drone surveying, laser scanning).
• Collaborate closely with mining engineers, geologists, and operations personnel.
• Prepare and submit statutory survey reports and ensure compliance with regulations.

Requirements

• BSc or National Diploma in Mine Surveying or Geomatics.
• 8+ years of experience in mine surveying, with significant experience in open pit operations.
• Professional registration with a relevant body (e.g., PLATO).
• Expertise in surveying software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D, Surpac, Deswik) and hardware.
• Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.
• Proven ability to manage survey operations in a large-scale mining environment.
