About the Role
Our client is seeking a knowledgeable and dedicated Horticulturalist and Crop Specialist to join their team in Pretoria, Gauteng. This hybrid role involves a combination of field-based work and office-based analysis, focusing on optimizing the cultivation of specialty crops for commercial markets. You will be responsible for advising on planting schedules, nutrient management, pest and disease control, and harvesting techniques to ensure the highest quality produce and yield. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for horticulture and a scientific approach to crop management, contributing to the success of innovative agricultural projects in the region.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive horticultural management plans for various crops.
- Conduct regular field assessments to monitor crop health, growth, and identify potential issues.
- Provide expert advice on soil preparation, fertilization, irrigation, and pest/disease management strategies.
- Oversee trial plots to evaluate new cultivars, techniques, and inputs.
- Analyze crop performance data and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with farm managers and research teams to ensure efficient and sustainable production practices in Pretoria.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, or a closely related field.
- At least 4 years of practical experience in commercial horticulture or crop science.
- Strong knowledge of plant physiology, soil science, and integrated pest management (IPM).
- Experience with data collection and analysis related to crop production.
- Excellent communication and reporting skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly.
- Willingness to travel to different farm sites for field assessments as part of the hybrid model.
