A growing small-to-medium sized audit and accounting practice is seeking a motivated and technically strong Audit Manager to join its assurance team in Benoni, Johannesburg.

The successful candidate will manage a portfolio of audit and assurance clients across a variety of industries, primarily applying IFRS for SMEs and operating within the South African regulatory environment.

This role is suited to a proactive individual who is able to manage multiple engagements simultaneously, lead audit teams effectively, maintain strong client relationships, and ensure high- quality deliverables within deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Audit & Assurance Management
    • Manage a portfolio of audit, independent review, and assurance engagements from planning through to completion
    • Review audit files, working papers, annual financial statements, and supporting documentation
    • Ensure engagements are completed in accordance with:
      • International Standards on Auditing (ISA)
      • IFRS for SMEs
      • South African Companies Act
      • Firm methodology and quality standards
    • Assess audit risks and design appropriate audit approaches and procedures
    • Review engagement budgets, timelines, and team allocations to ensure profitability and efficiency
    • Resolve complex accounting, audit, and reporting matters arising during engagements
    • Prepare and review management reports and communication to clients
  • Client Relationship Management
    • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with clients
    • Act as a primary point of contact for clients during engagements
    • Provide practical solutions and professional guidance to clients on accounting and audit-related matters
    • Attend client meetings and assist partners with business development opportunities where appropriate
  • Team Leadership & Staff Development
    • Supervise, mentor, and develop audit trainees and supervisors
    • Review team performance and provide constructive feedback and coaching
    • Assist with staff training and technical development initiatives
    • Ensure audit teams maintain high standards of professionalism and client service
    • Review and approve SAICA trainee assessments and competencies on the SAICA Electronic Assessment Tool (E.A.T.) system, ensuring compliance with SAICA training regulations and accurate assessment of trainee progress

Practice Management & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with firm policies, quality control procedures, and regulatory requirements
  • Monitor engagement progress and proactively address delays or issues
  • Assist with internal quality reviews and file monitoring processes
  • Support implementation and improvement of audit methodologies and efficiencies

Minimum Requirements

  • Completed SAICA articles (compulsory)
  • CA(SA) designation preferred but not compulsory
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in the role of Audit Supervisor or Audit Manager within a small-to-medium sized audit practice
  • Strong working knowledge of IFRS for SMEs, Income Tax Act, the Companies Act
  • Solid understanding of International Standards on Auditing (ISA)
  • Experience managing audit engagements independently from planning to completion
  • Experience supervising and reviewing the work of audit staff
  • Proficient in CaseWare Working Papers, Caseware Cloud and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Organised, proactive, and client-service driven
  • Commercially aware with a practical approach to problem solving

Advantageous Experience

  • Exposure to group audits and consolidations is preferred
  • Experience with companies across various industries including (but not limited to), attorney trust audits, property practitioner audits, FSCA audits, wholesalers, retailers and hospitality
  • Experience in independent reviews and related assurance services is essential
