About the Role

Our client is seeking a diligent and skilled Power Plant Operator to manage the daily operations of their thermal energy facility in Upington . This hands-on role involves monitoring plant equipment, controlling operational parameters, and ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable generation of electricity. You will be an integral part of a team responsible for maintaining power output and adhering to strict safety and environmental protocols in a critical energy production facility. The ideal candidate possesses a strong technical aptitude and a commitment to operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate power plant equipment, including boilers, turbines, generators, and associated control systems, to maintain optimal power output.
  • Respond to alarms and abnormal conditions, diagnosing issues and implementing corrective actions as per operating procedures.
  • Perform routine checks and inspections of plant equipment, reporting any deficiencies or maintenance needs promptly.
  • Ensure adherence to all safety regulations, operating procedures, and environmental standards to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Record operational data, generate shift reports, and communicate effectively with control room supervisors and maintenance personnel.
  • Participate in plant start-up, shutdown, and emergency response procedures as required.

Requirements

  • National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical qualification.
  • Proven experience as a Power Plant Operator, preferably in thermal power generation (coal, gas, or diesel).
  • Strong understanding of power plant systems, thermodynamics, and electrical principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and operating instructions.
  • Proficiency in using plant control systems and monitoring software.
  • Excellent situational awareness, problem-solving skills, and ability to work under pressure.
