About the Role
Our client is seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Mine Environmental Scientist to manage and oversee environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives at their operations near Mahikeng . This vital role ensures that all mining activities adhere to stringent environmental regulations and best practices. You will be responsible for environmental monitoring, impact assessment, rehabilitation planning, and the development of environmental management systems. Working closely with operational teams and regulatory bodies, you will play a key part in minimizing the environmental footprint of the mine and promoting sustainable resource extraction. This position requires a strong scientific background and practical experience in environmental management within an industrial context.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and develop environmental management plans (EMPs).
- Oversee environmental monitoring programs, including water quality, air quality, noise, and biodiversity.
- Ensure compliance with all national and local environmental legislation and permitting requirements.
- Develop and implement strategies for mine waste management, tailings disposal, and water management.
- Manage and coordinate mine rehabilitation and closure planning activities.
- Liaise with regulatory agencies, consultants, and community stakeholders on environmental matters.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental management, preferably within the mining or heavy industry sector.
- In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation (e.g., NEMA) and mining regulations.
- Experience with environmental monitoring techniques and data analysis.
- Strong understanding of mine closure and rehabilitation principles.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
