Job description

Established in 2004, Mercuria is one of the leading integrated energy and commodity trading companies in the world. We bring energy markets together to support the needs of today by trading, structuring finance, and investing into strategic assets, while generating more than $110 billion in turnover.

Our operations span over 50 countries on 5 continents, including all the major energy hubs. We trade physical oil, energy products, environmental products and other commodities from Geneva, London, Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing, Dubai, Houston, Calgary and Greenwich (CT).

We are committed to advancing the transition to a more sustainable, affordable and reliable energy system for tomorrow. Over 50% of our assets are in low carbon & energy transition sectors - providing a strong platform to trade these new markets and support decarbonization.

In 2023, we established Silvania, a $500 million fund, investing into restoration and protection of nature and biodiversity globally and in support of the Paris Agreement goals & UN 30x30 biodiversity initiative. This new asset class supports nature protection and provides sustainable financial returns.

We are seeking for an early-career trader to join our physical metals trading desk, supporting the metals flows with a specific focus on origination across African markets. This is a high-exposure role for someone eager to build a career in commodity trading, working closely with a senior trader on deal execution, supplier relationships, logistics management and market development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the senior trader in managing and growing physical metals flows
  • Identify, evaluate, and develop new sourcing opportunities and supplier relationships
  • Conduct market analysis, price benchmarking, and flow tracking to support trading decisions
  • Travel regularly into African markets to build relationships with producers, agents, and counterparties
  • Assist in contract negotiation, logistics coordination, and risk management for physical cargoes
  • Prepare market reports, deal summaries, and performance tracking for the desk
  • Liaise with operations, credit, and logistics teams to ensure smooth execution of trades

Candidate Profile

  • Early-career professional (typically 1–4 years' experience), with a strong appetite to grow into a full trading role
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to travel frequently and extensively into Africa
  • Strong analytical skills — comfortable with data, pricing models, and market analysis
  • Demonstrated business development mindset — proactive, relationship-driven, commercially curious
  • Prior exposure to commodities, trading, or African markets is a plus but not essential
  • Excellent communication skills; fluent Chinese speaker
  • Resilient, entrepreneurial, and comfortable operating in challenging environments

What We Offer

  • Direct mentorship from a senior physical trader
  • Exposure to end-to-end physical trading, from origination to execution
  • Fast-track career development within a global trading platform
  • Competitive compensation with performance-linked incentives
