Job description

Purpose Of The Job:

To supervise and coordinate all workshop activities relating to Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs), buses, and trucks, ensuring high-quality repairs, maintenance, productivity, safety, and customer satisfaction. The Workshop Foreman is responsible for managing technicians, controlling workshop efficiency, maintaining manufacturer standards, and ensuring vehicles are repaired correctly and delivered on time.

Key Responsibilities:
Workshop Operations Management

  • Plan, organize, and control daily workshop activities
  • Allocate jobs effectively to technicians based on skill level and workload
  • Ensure maximum workshop productivity and efficiency
  • Monitor work in progress and ensure adherence to delivery commitments
  • Manage workshop capacity and optimize labour utilization

Technical Supervision

  • Provide technical support and guidance to technicians
  • Diagnose complex vehicle faults and assist with troubleshooting
  • Ensure repairs comply with manufacturer specifications and workshop standards
  • Authorize quality control checks before vehicle release
  • Stay updated with vehicle technologies, diagnostics, and repair procedures

Team Leadership

  • Lead, motivate, and supervise workshop technicians, apprentices, and support staff
  • Conduct performance reviews and coaching sessions
  • Identify training requirements and support staff development
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and a customer-focused culture

Quality Control

  • Ensure repairs are completed correctly the first time
  • Conduct final inspections and road tests where required
  • Monitor repeat repairs and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship and technical excellence

Customer Service

  • Support Service Advisors with technical information and repair estimates
  • Assist with customer concerns and technical queries
  • Ensure customer expectations regarding repair times and costs are managed effectively
  • Contribute to high customer satisfaction and retention levels

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • Promote safe workshop practices and enforce safety procedures
  • Maintain housekeeping and cleanliness standards within the workshop
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer policies and dealership procedures

Parts & Inventory Control

  • Liaise with Parts Department regarding parts availability
  • Monitor parts usage and reduce unnecessary wastage
  • Ensure proper management of warranty parts and returns

Warranty Administration Support

  • Ensure warranty repairs meet manufacturer requirements
  • Assist in preparing warranty claims and supporting documentation
  • Minimize warranty rejections through accurate processes

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Qualified Diesel Mechanic, Commercial Vehicle Technician, or equivalent trade qualificatio
  • Minimum 3 years in a supervisory or Foreman position in commercial vehicle maintenance and repairs at dealership level
  • Extensive experience working with:
  • Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs)
  • Panel Vans and Sprinters
  • Buses and Coaches
  • Heavy Commercial Vehicles and Trucks
  • Kerridge dealership system
  • Valid driver's licence
  • Ability to road-test commercial vehicles where required
  • Willingness to work overtime and attend breakdown situations when necessary

Technical Experience:

  • Diesel engines
  • Transmission systems
  • Air brake systems
  • Vehicle electronics and diagnostics
  • Fleet maintenance
  • Preventative maintenance programs
  • Warranty procedures and compliance
