Mine Safety Officer - On-Site Operations

About the Role

Our client is seeking a diligent and experienced Mine Safety Officer to ensure the highest safety standards are maintained at their operational site in Tembisa . This crucial role involves implementing and enforcing comprehensive safety protocols, conducting regular inspections, and fostering a strong safety culture among all personnel. You will be instrumental in preventing accidents, identifying potential hazards, and ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations within the mining environment. The successful candidate will work closely with site management and operational teams to uphold a safe and productive working atmosphere, contributing directly to the well-being of every individual on site and the overall efficiency of operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety management systems specific to mining operations.
• Conduct regular site inspections and safety audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
• Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near misses, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Deliver safety training and toolbox talks to all site personnel, promoting a proactive safety culture and awareness.
• Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and statistics, and advise management on safety performance and areas for improvement.
• Ensure the proper use and maintenance of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) by all employees and contractors.

Requirements

• Relevant qualification in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Safety Officer, specifically within the mining industry.
• In-depth knowledge of South African mining health and safety legislation (e.g., MHSA).
• Strong understanding of risk assessment, incident investigation, and emergency response procedures.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with all levels of staff.
• Ability to work effectively on-site in a demanding operational environment.
