Crop Scientist - Viticulture

About the Role

Our client is seeking a specialized Crop Scientist with a focus on Viticulture to join their team in the renowned wine-growing region near Port Elizabeth . This role is dedicated to enhancing vineyard productivity, grape quality, and sustainable viticultural practices. You will conduct research, field trials, and provide expert recommendations to vineyard managers and winemakers. The ideal candidate possesses a strong scientific background in plant science, deep knowledge of grape cultivation, and a passion for innovation in the wine industry, contributing to a prestigious winery known for its commitment to quality and excellence in the Eastern Cape.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research on grape varietal performance, soil health, and vineyard management techniques.
• Design and implement field trials to evaluate new cultivation methods, pest control agents, and sustainable practices.
• Analyze vineyard data to monitor vine health, yield, and grape quality.
• Provide technical guidance to vineyard teams on irrigation, pruning, canopy management, and disease prevention.
• Collaborate with winemaking teams to ensure optimal grape characteristics for desired wine styles.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in viticulture and enology.

Requirements

• Master's or Ph.D. in Viticulture, Plant Science, Agronomy, or a related field.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in viticultural research and vineyard management.
• In-depth knowledge of grape physiology, soil science, and pest/disease management specific to viticulture.
• Proven experience with experimental design and statistical analysis of agricultural data.
• Excellent scientific communication skills, both written and verbal.
