Senior Environmental Scientist - Mining Compliance

About the Role

Our client is seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Senior Environmental Scientist to lead environmental compliance and management efforts for their operations near Stellenbosch . This critical role involves ensuring adherence to all environmental regulations, developing and implementing environmental management plans, and mitigating the environmental impact of mining activities. You will liaise with regulatory bodies, internal teams, and external stakeholders to promote sustainable mining practices. This position is an excellent opportunity for an experienced environmental professional to contribute to responsible resource development in a region known for its natural beauty and stringent environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and ensure compliance with all environmental laws, regulations, and permits applicable to mining operations.
• Develop, implement, and manage Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Environmental Management Plans (EMPs).
• Conduct regular environmental audits and site inspections to monitor compliance and identify potential risks.
• Manage environmental monitoring programs (e.g., water quality, air emissions, biodiversity) and analyze results.
• Liaise with government agencies, consultants, and community stakeholders on environmental matters.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in environmental management, with a significant portion focused on the mining sector .
• In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation and permitting processes.
• Experience in developing and managing EIAs and EMPs.
• Strong report writing, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
