Grid Operations Specialist

About the Role

Our client is seeking a vigilant and technically adept Grid Operations Specialist to join their critical infrastructure team in Polokwane . This role is essential for monitoring and managing the stability and reliability of the electricity grid, particularly as it integrates increasing amounts of renewable energy. You will be responsible for real-time operational oversight, fault detection, and implementing procedures to ensure uninterrupted power supply. This position requires a deep understanding of power systems and a strong ability to react decisively in dynamic operational environments, ensuring the smooth functioning of energy distribution.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor the electricity grid in real-time using SCADA systems and other operational tools to detect anomalies and potential disruptions.
• Respond promptly to grid disturbances, power outages, and emergency situations, implementing corrective actions to restore normal operations.
• Analyze grid performance data to identify trends, optimize load balancing, and enhance system reliability.
• Coordinate with power generation facilities, transmission operators, and distribution networks to manage power flow and maintain grid stability.
• Develop and implement operational procedures and protocols to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
• Participate in grid system planning and expansion projects, providing operational insights and recommendations.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; advanced studies in power systems are preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in power system operations, grid management, or a related utility role.
• Proficiency with SCADA systems, grid modeling software, and other relevant operational technologies.
• Strong understanding of power generation, transmission, and distribution principles.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills under pressure.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by operational needs.
