SOLTRAK API Development Engineer

Location:Cape Town, South Africa Type:Full-time fixed-term contract (3 months, with possible 3-month extension) Remuneration:R 22 000 – R 28 000 per month, plus performance bonuses

SOLTRAK is looking for an API Development Engineer to join our team in Black River Park, Observatory, Cape Town. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working with APIs, solving technical integration challenges, and taking ownership of integrations from initial technical investigation through to successful deployment. Said engineer should be eager to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment within the renewable energy sector. The successful candidate will work within the standards, architecture, development practices and processes established by the SOLTRAK Software Development team.

Responsibilities

• Own the full lifecycle of third‑party API integrations, from initial investigation through to deployment and verification.
• Review API documentation, data structures, authentication methods and integration requirements.
• Engage with external providers to obtain documentation, credentials, sandbox access and platform accounts.
• Establish how renewable energy assets are shared with or made accessible to SOLTRAK.
• Investigate and resolve technical blockers that prevent integrations from progressing.
• Develop integrations in line with SOLTRAK's established architecture, coding standards and practices.
• Implement data retrieval, transformation, validation, authentication and error handling.
• Write automated tests and validate integrations before and after deployment.
• Document integration requirements, technical decisions, configurations and provider-specific considerations.
• Collaborate with the Software Development team through code review, testing and deployment.
• Track integration progress, dependencies and outstanding requirements.
• Work with the Software Development team through code review, testing and deployment processes.
• Validate that integrations are successfully receiving and processing the expected data once deployed.
• Maintain clear documentation of the status and requirements of integrations in progress.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

• Relevant diploma, degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related field.
• 1–3 years of professional software development experience.
• Experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and relational databases.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON and API authentication.
• Strong problem‑solving, investigative and communication skills.
• Ability to engage effectively with external technical teams and API providers.
• Attention to detail when working with data structures and API responses.
• Ability to follow established software architecture, coding standards and version‑control practices.

Beneficial

• Experience integrating with SOAP or other legacy APIs.
• Experience in renewable energy, solar PV, IoT or energy monitoring.

Physical Requirements

• Own Transport and drivers license.
• Reside in Cape Town or the immediate surrounds.
• Laptop will be provided.

Remuneration

Fixed monthly contract with total remuneration of R 22 000 – R 28 000. Final offer in line with Candidate experience and qualifications. Performance-based incentive: R 2 500 bonus for every meter integration and R 5 000 bonus for every inverter integration achieved within the employment period. Successful delivery linked to SOLTRAK's development documentation and coding standards and industry best practice. Documentation and full testing included as part of development delivery.
