Job description

UI DESIGNER

Tsogo Sun Digital

Cape Town based role

One rule before you read on: put a link to your portfolio in your CV. We're hiring a designer, so we'd rather look at your work than read about it. Think of the portfolio link as a required field. No link, and the form doesn't submit.

Tsogo Sun is the name behind Montecasino, Gold Reef City, Suncoast and a portfolio of 14 casino and entertainment destinations across South Africa. Tsogo Sun Digital is where that heritage goes online. We run the group's digital ventures, including playTSOGO and bet.co.za, in a market that never sits still. Start-up pace. Blue-chip backing. A customer base most digital businesses can only dream of, and the mandate to go after it.

Do you love designing digital experiences that feel intuitive, look polished and make it easy for customers to take action?

Can you move from a user journey to a wireframe, from a responsive interface to an interactive prototype, and from a design concept to developer-ready specifications without losing clarity or consistency?

Can you look at a registration or deposit funnel, see exactly where customers are dropping off, and fix it in the layout and the journey, not just the copy?

You know the designer we mean. The one who can't open a betting app without redesigning its cashier in their head. Who knows the bet slip is the most important screen in the product and treats it that way. Who argues for one less field in the registration form, and wins. Whose Figma files are so clean the developers stop asking questions. Who has the prototype clickable before the meeting ends, and then goes and checks the numbers after it ships.

Tsogo Sun Digital is looking for a UI Designer to join our growing digital team in Cape Town.

The job, in plain terms.

You own how our products look and work on screen, on desktop, on mobile web and in app, across playTSOGO and bet.co.za. That means the page layouts, the end-to-end journeys, the components and the design systems behind them. You take briefs from product, marketing and CRM, turn them into wireframes, prototypes and developer-ready designs in Figma, and work with our front-end developers until what's live matches what you designed. You are measured on whether customers get through the journeys you design: registration, deposit, finding a game, placing a bet.

This is a UI role with a UX brain and a conversion mindset. You will balance brand expression with usability, responsive behaviour, accessibility, responsible gambling requirements and commercial objectives. Our front end runs on a third-party gaming platform (Playtech), so part of the craft is knowing the platform well enough to get the most out of it, and knowing when to push for more.

Around nine in ten of our customers are on a phone. So this is mobile-first in the true sense: thumb zones, one-handed use, bottom navigation, fast-loading pages and interfaces that work on a cracked Android screen in a taxi, not just on a designer's monitor. Desktop still matters, and so does the app. You design for all three without designing three different products.

We are especially looking for someone who understands that interface design is not decoration. It is structure. It is clarity. It is consistency. It is reducing friction. It is helping customers understand what to do next and making every interaction feel simple and intentional. In a betting and gaming product, that is also where the money is: a confusing deposit form, a registration step too many, or a bet slip that hides the button all cost real revenue every day.

You will work day to day with our creative designers, who own the brand look and feel, and with our front-end developers, who build what you design. You turn brand into interface, and interface into developer-ready specs. You will also work closely with product owners, CRM, marketing and the testing team.

You'll live in Figma: components, variants, auto layout, variables, interactive prototypes and Dev Mode handover. If you're already using AI-assisted design and prototyping tools such as Claude Design or Open Design to get from idea to clickable prototype in an afternoon, that's a real advantage here. We use AI every day and we want people who do too.

What's on offer is a live product used by real customers every day, two brands, two design systems that are yours to own, a growing team with real momentum, and numbers you can watch move when your work goes live. Most designers spend their careers polishing someone else's product. Here, you help shape ours.

Examples of what you will work on

  • Responsive interface designs for playTSOGO and bet.co.za across desktop, mobile web and app, mobile first
  • End-to-end customer journeys, from first visit to first deposit and beyond, with wireframes, page layouts and interactive prototypes
  • UX work that earns the UI: journey mapping, usability reviews, light user testing and competitor benchmarking so layouts are grounded in how people actually use the product
  • Conversion optimisation: reading funnel and drop-off data, finding where customers stall, and designing and testing layout and journey variants to lift registration, deposit and engagement rates
  • Navigation, menus, search, filters, lobbies and content discovery experiences that get customers to the right game or market in two or three taps
  • Registration, login, KYC, deposit, withdrawal and account management journeys designed to cut friction: fewer fields, inline validation, autofill, saved payment methods, clear error recovery and visible progress
  • Bet slip, odds display and in-play layouts that stay fast and legible on a phone
  • Promotional pages, campaign landing pages, bonus and rewards interfaces and reusable components
  • Interactive prototypes in Figma that let product, development and stakeholders click through a journey before a line of code is written
  • Building, maintaining and evolving our design systems, component libraries, tokens and UI standards across two brands, including light and dark modes
  • Preparing developer-ready designs in Figma: components, variants, auto layout, variables, responsive states, interaction notes and clear specs, handed over through Dev Mode
  • Reviewing implemented work with front-end developers and the testing team so what goes live matches what was designed
  • Designing to accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2) and building 18+, responsible gambling and T&Cs elements into the interface properly, not as an afterthought
  • Using AI-assisted design and prototyping tools such as Claude Design, Open Design or Figma Make to move faster from idea to testable prototype, while keeping everything on-system
  • Supporting selected campaign and omnichannel experiences where the digital product connects with Tsogo Sun's properties and broader brand activity

What we are looking for

  • 3 to 5 years' experience in UI, UX, digital product or web design
  • A portfolio that shows strong, modern, commercially relevant interface design, ideally including mobile-first and transactional flows
  • Real UX experience: journey mapping, information architecture, usability principles and basic research and testing methods, and the judgement to know when a layout is fighting the user
  • Conversion optimisation experience: funnel analysis, A/B testing and landing page, registration or checkout optimisation, with examples of what you changed and what it did
  • Strong visual craft and a user-centred, digital-first mindset
  • Strong instincts for UI, hierarchy, interaction and page layout: every screen has a clear next action
  • Confidence designing responsive experiences across desktop, mobile web and native app, with mobile as the starting point
  • Advanced working knowledge of Figma, including components, variants, auto layout, variables, interactive prototyping and Dev Mode handover
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted design and prototyping tools such as Claude Design, Open Design or Figma Make is a real advantage
  • Experience creating and maintaining design systems or scalable component libraries is a big plus
  • A practical understanding of accessibility (WCAG 2.2), responsive design and current web and mobile interface patterns
  • An understanding of how design influences usability, trust, engagement and conversion, especially in registration, payment and account flows
  • Comfort designing within the constraints of a third-party platform or CMS
  • Basic understanding of HTML and CSS, and how front-end developers work, is an advantage
  • Experience in betting, iGaming, fintech or another transactional, regulated digital product is a strong advantage, but not essential if your craft and portfolio are strong

Why this role is exciting

  • You will work on the screens that matter most in this industry: the lobby, the bet slip, the cashier, the registration form, and you will see the conversion numbers move when you get them right
  • You will own and evolve two design systems across two brands, not just use someone else's
  • You will design for a live product used by customers every day, on desktop, mobile web and app, with a genuinely mobile-first mandate
  • You will finally get to fix the things that annoy you about every betting app you've ever used
  • You will work with modern tools and AI-assisted workflows in a team that expects you to use them
  • You will collaborate closely with product, development, creative, CRM and marketing teams, with a real say in what gets built
  • You will be part of a growing digital team with real momentum, backed by one of South Africa's best-known entertainment groups
