PLC Programmer/ Designer / Instrumentation & Control Technician

SUMMARY:

A leading automation and control systems company is seeking a PLC Programmer / Designer / Instrumentation & Control Technician to join their team in Johannesburg. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, programming, commissioning, and support of industrial automation systems across various industries. This role is ideal for a self-motivated individual with strong PLC programming experience and a willingness to travel extensively both locally and internationally.

POSITION INFO:

Job Description:

• Develop PLC programs from Functional Design Specifications (FDS) using Ladder Logic
• Design, commission, test, and troubleshoot industrial automation systems
• Configure and commission Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and associated control equipment
• Interpret and modify electrical schematics and control system drawings
• Provide commissioning, maintenance, and technical support on client sites
• Perform fault-finding and optimisation of PLC-controlled system
• Assist with project implementation, upgrades, and modifications
• Produce technical documentation and maintain accurate project records
• Travel extensively within South Africa and abroad to support installations and commissioning activities

Skills & Experience:

• Proven experience programming PLCs from Functional Design Specifications
• Strong understanding of Mitsubishi, Siemens (TIA Portal), and Omron PLC platforms
• Exposure to Allen Bradley PLCs would be advantageous
• Experience working with Variable Speed Drives, including Mitsubishi, Danfoss, Siemens, Allen Bradley, and Omron
• Ability to read and interpret electrical and control system drawings
• Experience using AutoCAD or E-Plan for electrical design would be advantageous
• Previous experience within an FMCG manufacturing environment would be advantageous
• Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting abilities
• Excellent communication and technical reporting skills
• Ability to work independently and under pressure

Qualification:

• National Diploma, BTech, BEng, BSc, Trade Test, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Instrumentation, Automation, or Control Systems
• Relevant PLC, Automation, or Instrumentation certifications will be advantageous
• Valid driver's licence and own reliable transport
• Valid passport
