About the Role

Our client, a global leader in automotive innovation, is seeking an accomplished Principal Automotive Powertrain Engineer to join their advanced research and development team in Randburg, Gauteng . This senior leadership role is pivotal in shaping the future of vehicle propulsion systems, encompassing both traditional internal combustion engines and emerging electric and hybrid technologies. The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in powertrain design, development, calibration, and performance optimization. You will lead complex projects, mentor junior engineers, and drive strategic initiatives to deliver highly efficient, powerful, and sustainable powertrain solutions for the automotive market in Gauteng and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and validation of advanced powertrain systems, including engines, transmissions, electric motors, and battery systems.
• Define powertrain system architecture, performance targets, and technology roadmaps.
• Oversee the calibration and optimization of powertrain control systems for performance, efficiency, and emissions compliance.
• Manage powertrain development projects from concept through to production, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget.
• Conduct in-depth analysis of powertrain performance data and implement solutions for improvement.
• Mentor and guide a team of powertrain engineers, fostering technical excellence and innovation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including vehicle integration, manufacturing, and supply chain.
• Represent the company in technical discussions with suppliers, partners, and regulatory bodies.
• Stay at the forefront of powertrain technology advancements, including electrification, alternative fuels, and hybrid systems.
• Ensure all powertrain designs meet rigorous safety, reliability, and environmental standards.

Requirements

• Ph.D. or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in automotive powertrain engineering, with significant leadership roles.
• Deep expertise in internal combustion engine technology, electric vehicle powertrains, and hybrid systems.
• Proven experience with powertrain simulation tools (e.g., GT-SUITE, Amesim, MATLAB/Simulink).
• Strong knowledge of powertrain control systems, calibration techniques, and emissions regulations.
• Demonstrated experience in managing complex R&D projects and leading engineering teams.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
• Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to influence and collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
• Must be able to work on-site in Randburg, Gauteng.
