About the Role

Our client, a pioneering bioinformatics and genomics research company, is seeking an experienced Senior Computational Biologist to join their innovative team in the vibrant city of Cape Town, Western Cape . This critical role involves leveraging advanced computational approaches to analyze large-scale genomic datasets, drive biological discovery, and contribute to the development of next-generation diagnostics and therapeutics. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in bioinformatics, statistical analysis, and programming, coupled with a deep understanding of genomics and molecular biology. You will work collaboratively with experimental biologists and clinicians, transforming complex data into actionable biological insights. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact at the intersection of biology, data science, and medicine in a leading research hub.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement computational pipelines for the analysis of large-scale genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic data.
  • Perform in-depth statistical analysis and data mining of complex biological datasets to identify patterns, correlations, and significant findings.
  • Collaborate with experimental biologists, clinicians, and other stakeholders to design studies and interpret results.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality, reproducible code in languages such as Python, R, or Perl.
  • Contribute to the development of novel algorithms and computational methods for biological data analysis.
  • Visualize and present complex data effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in computational biology, genomics, and relevant technologies.
  • Mentor junior computational biologists and contribute to the team's scientific growth.
  • Participate in the writing of research proposals, manuscripts for publication, and presentations at scientific meetings.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • A minimum of 4-6 years of hands-on experience in computational biology and bioinformatics, with a strong focus on genomics data analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics (e.g., Python, R, Bash) and experience with relevant libraries and packages.
  • Solid understanding of statistical methods, machine learning techniques, and data mining.
  • Experience with common bioinformatics tools and databases (e.g., genome browsers, variant callers, sequence alignment tools).
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and high-performance computing environments is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with single-cell genomics or spatial transcriptomics is an advantage.

Benefits

Our client offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contributions, and professional development opportunities. You will work in a stimulating, research-intensive environment with access to state-of-the-art computational resources. Opportunities to publish research and attend leading scientific conferences are provided. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a blend of focused work in our Cape Town office and remote flexibility.
