Electrical Technician - Power Grid Maintenance

About the Role

Our client, a crucial entity within the Energy sector, is looking for a diligent and skilled Electrical Technician to join their Power Grid Maintenance team in Vereeniging, Gauteng . This hands-on role is essential for ensuring the reliability and safety of the electrical grid infrastructure. You will be responsible for performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting electrical faults, and undertaking repairs on a variety of grid equipment, including substations, transformers, and distribution lines. This position requires a strong understanding of electrical systems and a commitment to safety protocols. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of working independently or as part of a team to maintain uninterrupted power supply in the region.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine inspections, testing, and maintenance of electrical grid equipment, including transformers, switchgear, and protection relays.
• Diagnose and repair electrical faults and malfunctions in power distribution systems.
• Install and commission new electrical equipment according to technical specifications and safety standards.
• Respond to emergency power outages and perform necessary repairs to restore service promptly.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
• Ensure all work is carried out in strict adherence to safety regulations and company policies.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and materials used.
• Assist in the planning and execution of planned maintenance programs.
• Operate specialized diagnostic and testing equipment.
• Collaborate with other technicians and engineers to ensure efficient and effective grid operations.

Requirements

• National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) or equivalent qualification.
• Trade Test certification as an Electrician is essential.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in electrical maintenance, preferably within the power utility or industrial energy sector.
• Proven experience with high-voltage equipment, substations, and distribution networks.
• Strong understanding of electrical theory, safety procedures, and relevant South African regulations.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
• Proficiency in using hand tools and electrical testing equipment.
• Valid driver's license is required.
• Willingness to work shifts, including standby duties, and respond to emergencies as needed.
• Experience in the Vereeniging, Gauteng area is an advantage.
