Legal Counsel - General Commercial
About the Role
Our client, a well-established manufacturing and distribution company, is seeking a versatile General Commercial Legal Counsel to join their team in East London . This is a critical in-house role requiring a broad range of legal expertise to support the company's diverse business operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for advising on various commercial matters, including contract drafting and negotiation, corporate governance, dispute resolution, and ensuring regulatory compliance. You will work closely with senior management and operational teams, providing practical and timely legal solutions. This position offers significant exposure to various facets of commercial law within a dynamic business environment. The role is based at our client's offices in East London , demanding full-time presence.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of commercial contracts, including supplier agreements, customer contracts, distribution agreements, and service level agreements.
- Advise on corporate governance matters, ensuring compliance with the Companies Act and other relevant legislation.
- Manage and resolve commercial disputes, including liaising with external litigation counsel when necessary.
- Provide legal support for day-to-day business operations, addressing inquiries from various departments.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations affecting the company's operations.
- Assist in the development and implementation of company policies and procedures.
- Conduct legal research on various commercial and corporate law issues.
- Support transactional activities, such as acquisitions or divestitures, as required.
Requirements
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent qualification.
- Admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
- A minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience, with a strong foundation in general commercial and corporate law.
- Proven experience in contract drafting and negotiation.
- Solid understanding of South African company law and commercial regulations.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively within an office setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with stakeholders at all levels.
- Experience in dispute resolution is advantageous.
